The Lunchroom Social Ladder

The Art of Social Climbing
The Art of Social Climbing

Sometimes art imitates life.

Take this chart, for instance:  A GUIDE TO LUNCHROOM SOCIAL GROUPS, THROUGH LIFE.

Remember where you sat, and who you sat with, in your school cafeteria during lunchtime?  Did you notice how over the years, your social status and circle of friends tended to shift around a little bit, depending on your interests or popularity?

See – thinkgs really haven’t changed too much.  You still have the separation of the nerds from the geeks, the jocks from the popular kids.   Even in the corporate breakroom, there’s always that same bunch of cliques that form, based on commonalities or experiences.  It’s part of the reason why, at company gatherings, you may experience The Boss encouraging people to sit with at least one person they don’t already know very well – just to break those cliques up.

Yes, Web Watch can say that we recognize our lot in each of the lunchroom battlegrounds drawn out in the linked chart.

But we’re okay with that.  It’s gotten us to where we are today.  How about you?
