The 100 Thing Challenge: How I Got Rid of Almost Everything, Remade My Life, and Regained My Soul
The 100 Thing Challenge:
How I Got Rid of Almost Everything, Remade My Life, and Regained My Soul

How much “stuff” do you have?

George Carlin used to joke about needing a “place for your stuff”.  Look around – it’s just a bunch of stuff lying around your house, isn’t it?

Stuff you don’t need.

Stuff you can’t even remember why it’s there in the first place.

Stuff you have to decide to leave behind if a flood comes.  Stuff you have to recover if you were ever burgled.  Stuff you might need to list in a divorce proceeding. Stuff you’ll have to go through once your parents pass away years from now.

Have you ever thought that maybe you have too much stuff?

Dave Bruno thought this way.  That’s why he decided to start THE 100 THING CHALLENGE.  It’s a three-part test:

  • Reduce (get rid of stuff)
  • Refuse (to get more stuff)
  • Rejigger (your priorities about your stuff)

In other words – do what you can to minimize the amount of stuff that you surround yourself with.  In Dave’s book, he chronicles what his life was like after he got rid of all but 100 items he deemed most essential to live on.

Cell phone and computer?  Check.

Spork? Ditto.

Mittens? Sure – you just never know.

So what are the items that absolutely, positively can’t live without – if you had to limit yourself to taking a single item with you, wherever you go?
