Some states have abundant energy resources, and the cost to deliver that energy to one’s home can be very inexpensive.
Some states have higher energy taxes or infrastructure issues that make providing electricity more expensive than other places.
It should come as no surprise that the US ENERGY INFORMATION ADMINISTRATION collects and analyzes things like this, and makes that information available to us – the American public.
According to the EIA, these are the TOP TEN STATES WITH THE HIGHEST AVERAGE MONTHLY ENERGY COSTS in order from highest costs to least:

And here are the TOP TEN STATES WITH THE LOWEST AVERAGE COSTS:

The difference between North Dakota and Hawaii costs is staggering — electricity in Hawaii is about 4-1/2 times more expensive, assuming Web Watch’s math is right. But with their beautiful weather and scenery, we’ll guess that Hawaiians spend less time indoors watching TV and burning lightbulbs compared to middle America. We know we would be.
