Hey, Shorty!: A Guide to Combating Sexual Harassment
and Violence in Schools and on the Streets
During the 2010-2011 school year, a survey of over almost 2000 students in grades 7-12 was conducted by the American Association of University Women to find out HOW MANY TEENAGERS WERE VICTIMS OF SEXUAL HARASSMENT, whether in person or via text, email, or social media.
Some of the results may surprise you:
- 48% of all teens surveyed said that they had been the victim of some type of sexual harassment. Those that said they had been harassed, 56% were girls, and 40% were boys
- While about 50% did nothing, only 9% reported the incident to a teacher, guidance counselor, or other school official.
- Some of the types of harassment ranged from unwanted touching, being shown pictures they didn’t want to see, or even be the subject of rumors
