Behind the Scenes of the Greatest Day In American Sport – Super Bowl Sunday

Web Watch loves watching the Super Bowl.  Yeah, we don’t often care what teams are playing – although we always cheer for the NFC – but we love the glory, the spectacle, the over-excess of the event itself.

And yes, we even get to watch a decent commercial or two.

The Big Game, Pigskin Party, Gridiron Madness — whatever you end up calling the Super Bowl, there is typically one thing on everybody’s mind when Super Bowl weekend comes barrelling through:  HOW DO YOU THROW THE ULTIMATE SUPER BOWL PARTY?

Whatever you do — it all comes down to making sure that you have the right food, the right decorations, the right TV and sound system to enjoy the game.

And all that’s going to take, is money.

The Retail Advertising and Marketing Association asked consumers what they did to prepare for the big game, and they found that AMERICANS WILL SPEND $11 BILLION IN CELEBRATING THE SUPER BOWL.

$11 billion, just for one sporting event.  No wonder there are petitions encouraging the NFL to move Super Sunday to Super Saturday instead, so that all of America can sleep in after a rough night of partying.

The average person who wants to enjoy the game will spend $63.87 on food, beverages, and cheering apparel.  Web Watch has been known to spend a whole lot more than that when our team makes it to the Big Dance.

So what do people really spend their money on?

  • 71.3% goes to food and beverages (or to be more honest, “beer and chips”)
  • 8.6% is spent on team stuff (hats, shirts, jerseys)
  • 6.4% on decorations (banners, plates, signs, giant inflatable Vince Lombardi trophies

And how do you throw a party?  5.1% of all those people who are planning on watching the game will buy a new TV just for the event.
