Maybe you’re really suffering from Mom Jean-itis, without really knowing it.   And because only Web Watch has the heart to tell it to you straight, maybe now it’s time for you to change your wardrobe… for the better.

So first, let’s get to the classic DEFINITION OF MOM JEANS, as described in part on Saturday Night Live and on Urban Dictionary:

  • typically ugly shade of blue denim
  • a high waist, above the belly button
  • accentuates the flat butt
  • generous fabric in the thighs and elsewhere. Kinda baggy looking
  • pleats
  • tapered legs
  • occasionally have an elastic waistband

Rachel, a blogger from Alabama, knows all too well the horrors of Mom Jeans, and has made it part of her mission in life to RID THE WORLD OF MOM JEANS, one butt at a time.

According to Rachel, part of the Mom Jeans problem can be solved simply by choosing a pair of jeans that have properly placed and sized rear pockets.  Large rear pockets that run from the lower back down to the bottom of the butt cheek can make your mom’s butt look HUGE in those jeans.  That’s why you should look for rear pockets that are a bit smaller, and start more towards the center of your butt cheek.

It’s a really easy thing to remember:  Large rear pockets = large rear.  Small rear pockets = small rear.

Placement of the pockets is also paramount.  If the pockets are spaced too far apart, regardless of the proper sizing of the rear pocket fabric, then you could end up with a “triple butt cheek” — in other words, the huge pocket spread will showcase your huge rear spread.

Another item that Rachel points out of that the pockets should never be diagonal.  That angle can also attribute to Pointing Out The Butt, which you would want to avoid at all costs.

The length of your jean is also important to avoid the Mom Jean look.  Another rule to remember is that your jeans should never show your socks.
