The more sex you have, the more likely you are to abuse alcohol or drugs

Web Watch has long heard the old adage that too much alcohol and drugs would lead to too much sex, whether it be promiscuous college adventures after druken fraternity parties with your secret crush or something more dubious from club dates or online hookups.

But all that may just be a precursor to what really happens later in life, especially with women (men, not so much)…

ACCORDING TO A STUDY IN Christchurch New Zealand, Dr Joe Boden has concluded that the more sex partners a woman has had, the more likely she is to turn to alcohol or drugs — and the findings did not show the same level of correlation for men.

The study is based on a survey of 1000 people, and the research showed that women who averaged 2.5 sexual partners a year were 10 times more likely to be clinically dependent on drugs or alcohol at age 21.  Seven times likely by age 26.  17 times more likely by age 32.

In other words, this scientific study says that while we may have believed that drugs and alcohol can lead to an increase in sexual activity/partners… there’s a strong case to be made that the exact opposite is true: that it’s the sex that leads to the substance dependence.

So how was this different for men?  Because that alcohol and drug dependence for men, while existent, did not correlate with the number of partners those men had.

The key number of sexual partners for women was 15.  Women who had fewer than 15 partners were less likely to be dependent on drugs or alcohol, but that possibility went up sharply when women had more than 15 partners.
