What size rocks are used in stoning?

In some parts of the world, stoning someone for legal, immoral, religious-based beliefs or other reasons is an accepted method of execution – whether the rest of the world believes stoning to be reasonable or not is a question that Web Watch will let others debate.

Still, one question that many have is WHAT IS STONING?

The National Post put together a full graphic outlining the process, as outlined by an official penal code.

One aspect that Web Watch was intrigued by was the extremely precise definition of what constituted an OFFICIAL STONING STONE description:

  • The size of the stone used in stoning shall not be too large, nor so small as to not be called a “stone”.
  • Due to size, pebbles are ruled out, as are rocks.
  • The ideal sized stone would be “around the size of a tangerine”

So let’s switch “stoning” to “fruiting”.   Throwing an orange (or forbid, a grapefruit) at someone definitely would leave a strong mark.  Throwing a Cutie(tm) would be akin to throwing a pebble and barely budge anyone on the receiving end.   Lemons or limes would be out – their pointy ends could hurt, plus you could get some real pitch speed on those suckers.  And bananas just aren’t stable enough for throwing – the aerodynamic principles of a banana are slim, at best.

But a tangerine? If you’re going to throw fruit at someone, a tangerine is probably your best bet.
