The average phone user checks their phone 150 times per day

How many times a day do you check your phone, whether it be for messages, emails, Twitter, Facebook status updates, Instagram, or actually making a phone call to someone?  We’re not even talking exclusively smartphone users, who have those things glued to their hands at all times.  We’re including all mobile phone users here.

Heck, you may even be reading this Web Watch post on your phone right now.

Would you beleive that, according to Nokia and others, that the AVERAGE USER CHECKS THEIR PHONE AT LEAST 150 TIMES PER DAY?

How can that be?  It must be much, much less than that, you say.  After all, 150 times a day equates to about once every seven seconds.

Let’s look deeper into the average phone usage stats from Tomi Ahonen:

  • Send, receive, draft, or check to see if you have any new messages – 23 times per day
  • Place three calls, receive three calls.
  • 16 calls that are either dropped calls, voice mail, missed connections, etc.
  • Check the clock on the phone, because you don’t use a watch anymore, a total of 18 times per day
  • Check your phone alarm eight times per day.  Web Watch doesn’t know why Tomi’s number is so high here, as we beleive in a “set it and forget it” philosophy.
  • Take eight photos a day
  • Check out music on the phone 13 times a day
  • Play 12 different games a day
  • Check appointments or other calendar-related activities five times per day
  • Social Media (Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, etc) nine times per day
  • Check the news six times a day
  • Do a web search three times a day, while actually using the web an additional three times
  • Make or watch a cellphone video six times a day
  • Charge that phone – yeah, if you’re using your phone this much, you’re likely charging it three times per day
  • And finally – you’re checking your voicemail at least once.

So Tomi has proven that 150 times a day, on average, figure is plausible.

So what about you?  Can you live for a day without your phone?  If not, why don’t you count how many times you pick up and use your phone over the course of a day to see what your phone usage mounts up to.

It’s possible that you’re a phone nerd with signs of addiction – especially if your phone usage number is up over 200 times a day (yeah, you’re going to count each individual text message as a single line item here).   Post your phone usage number below, and we’ll see who is the biggest phone user around.
