If you have to drink a Trader Joe’s “Two Buck Chuck” wine, which would you choose?

We know that you’re one of those people who went out to Trader Joe’s and bought a few cases of Charles Shaw vintages for your last dinner party.

You felt that the wine was good enough – at $2 a bottle ($3 a bottle in some states, due to shipping costs) – that you’d be saving some money by serving basic wine to your guests and they’ll never know the difference.

Here’s a hint if you are planning on doing this:  decant those bottles.  Don’t let your friends know that you’re serving them Two Buck Chuck, as no matter how drinkable the wine may be, their initial impression will be solely based on the price you paid per bottle.

Web Watch tends to be a little more snobby when it comes to our wine, so we’ll spring a little more money for the Trader Joe’s Grand Reserve line… those we find to be really tasty and comparable to more name brands you’ll find elsewhere when compared to the more simplistic flavors of the Charles Shaw line.  But as with practically everything, taste is subjective.  If the Charles Shaw wine works for you, then there’s no reason to pay more money if you won’t appreciate the differences.

But if you do find yourself in a situation where you absolutely must serve Charles Shaw to your party guests, which wines in that line are distinguished enough to make the grade?

That’s the question that Foodbeast put forth to TWO SOMMELIERS WHO RATED TWO BUCK CHUCK for its drinkability and quality.

You’ll want to read the article for their individual tasting notes as to why each wine got the score it got, but in the meantime – here’s their opinionated ranking for the Charles Shaw wines, in descending order of drinkability/quality from Most Liked to Least Liked:

  1. Merlot
  2. Chardonnay
  3. Shiraz
  4. Cabernet Sauvignon
  5. Pinot Grigio
  6. Nouveau
  7. Sauvignon Blanc
  8. White Zinfandel

What’s your opinion? Do you drink the Two Buck Chuck at all, and if so, do you agree with these rankings?
