How many bodies can a cemetery hold?

There’s one thing that’s a given in life, they say: death and taxes.

And if you’re lucky, you won’t ever have to pay taxes.

But everybody is going to die sometime, and the question you should ask is what do you plan on doing with your body when you’re gone?  Are you a burial person?  A cremation person?

Not everybody is going to have their ashes sprinked into the water on the it’s a small world ride at Walt Disney World (we know it’s happened), or packed into a firework and blown up in a celebratory display, or made into a diamond.

Some people like to consider themselves environmentalists, and don’t see why they should take up valuable land with a burial when their body could be put to better use.

And when was the last time you saw a new cemetery open up?  It’s not likely to happen anytime soon — all the good death lots are already spoken for.

So assuming that you do want to START YOUR OWN CEMETERY, you’ll want to contact the ICCFA – the INTERNATIONAL CEMETERY CREMATION AND FUNERAL ASSOCIATION for their insight.

Now that’s out of the way, let’s get down to the real question at hand — HOW MANY DEAD BODIES CAN A CEMETERY HOLD?

It boils down to about 1,250 bodies per acre.  Twice that if you bury folks two at a time on top of each other, as some couples have chosen to do.

Or, if you believe randomly discovered math on the Internet  – if everybody who died in a single year was buried at one time in one location, they’d take up about 80 SQUARE MILES.
