Use the Adventure Generator to not make Leeroy Jenkins wait any longer than he has to

Dungeons and Dragons Players Handbook
Dungeons and Dragons Players Handbook

Web Watch went to school with a bunch of nerds.

Granted, today’s economy is run by nerds – and considering how many people are sucked into wasting their time on Facebook and Twitter, it looks like the nerds did get their revenge.

Except back then, nerds weren’t just computer-oriented folk.  Sometimes, those same kids would wander out of the computer lab and into broad daylight – proudly holding their DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS PLAYERS GUIDE, MONSTERS MANUAL, or 20-SIDED DICE as they shuffled off to their next D&D encounter.

Flash Fun: Achievement Unlocked 2 (time to kill more elephants!)

Achievement Unlocked
Achievement Unlocked

While we know that Web Watch proclaimed that THIS IS THE ONLY LEVEL TOO was a sequel to the hit Flash platformer ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED - we admit that we weren’t really being extremely honest with you, the Web Watch reader.

Oh, it was a worthy game in the Achievement Unlocked pantheon, but it wasn’t a sequel in the true sense of the word.

So Web Watch is here with an apology, and a make-good link for you:

Why an Athletes’ Creed? Because 81% of athletes surveyed said it’s better to win than play fair

Good Sport
Good Sport

When it comes to sports – and more importantly, how athletes present themselves both on and off the field – times have changed a lot over the past few years.

With Soccer Parents getting into fights with coaches over why their kids aren’t getting enough field time, fighting-enducing trash-talking during a game, athletes climbing into the stands to punch out hecklers, or even some sports where the scoreboard is being taken away entirely “because kids don’t want the pressure to have to win” — the reason for sports to exist in the first place are slowly falling down by the wayside as the “spirit of competition” gives way to “winning at all costs”.

The World’s Fastest Game of Monopoly: 21 seconds

Monopoly Slot Machine
Monopoly Casino Slot Machine Game

If you have ever been to Las Vegas, then you should be familiar with one of the most popular slot machine game themes ever made: Monopoly.  (Yes, the ubiquitious Wheel! of! Fortune! games are a more popular theme, but that’s a different article for a different day).

And when it comes to playing Monopoly – playing the Monopoly-themed slot machine is certainly one way to say that you have played the World’s Fastest Game of Monopoly.

But you would be incorrect, as the slot machine is not the board game, and when it comes to talking smack about Monopoly, it’s all about the board game.

So, Web Watch readers, we ask you this question:  assuming you play exactly by the listed rules in a standard set of Monopoly, WHAT IS THE SHORTEST AMOUNT OF TIME THAT A MONOPOLY GAME CAN BE PLAYED?

Flash Fun: “Cursed Treasure – Don’t Touch My Gems” tower defense

Tower Defense

If there’s one type of video game that Web Watch can’t get enough of, it’s games in the TOWER DEFENSE genre.  We’ve already talked about the GUY WHO INVENTED THE ORIGINAL TOWER DEFENSE GAME, along with a REALLY DEEP AND VARIED VERSION in GEMCRAFT CHAPTER 0.

Here is another variation on the Tower Defense theme entitled CURSED TREASURE – DON’T TOUCH MY GEMS.

Flash Fun: This Is The Only Level Too – sequel to Achievement Unlocked

Video Game Achievements
Video Game Achievements

Remember a few months ago when WEB WATCH told you about ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED, the game where you had to manuever an elephant around a screen full of deadly spikes in order to complete a series of tasks, ultimately fulfilling all of your achievement goals outlined by the game’s creator?

Well, the game author is back with a new creation to drive you batty:  THIS IS THE ONLY LEVEL TOO, a platform game where the premise is basically the same:  you have to move your elephant character around the deadly screen in order to complete the game.

The Scrabble rule change doesn’t affect anyone who already knows how to play

Scrabble Champion shirt

The recent announcement from Mattel concerning CHANGING THE SCRABBLE RULESET TO ALLOW FOR PROPER NAMES AND OTHER BLASPHEMY is really not that big a deal.

First, some perspective.  How exactly is the game being modified?

  • Celebrity names and other proper nouns will now be allowed.  What comprises the proper spelling of specific proper names will be left to the discretion of the players at the time the play is made.  In some families, for example, the name “Micheal” may be the proper way to spell the name “Michael” – to them, that would be an acceptable play.
  • Players will be able to spell words backwards on the game board, reading from right-to-left or bottom-to-top instead of the traditional directions.  Web Watch kinda likes this idea.
  • Players will now be able to play words that aren’t connected to any other words on the board.  Web Watch is not such a fan of this.
  • The rules are only being applied to a special edition of the game being released in Britain – the traditional game and its rules are not being modified at all.

How Many Classic Arcade Games Can You Name? (It’s the arcade version of Where’s Waldo?)

Web Watch is a big fan of the classic video games that populated arcades back in the 80′s and early 90′s.

Not like today’s gaming arenas, filled with craptastic ticket-dispensing machines that teach kids different variations of gambling in order to “earn” enough tickets to buy a lousy stuffed animal that would have cost half as much if purchased directly from the local Toys R Us.

No, we’re talking the classic quarter-munching games like Galaga, Ms Pac Man, Defender, i-Robot, Dig Dug, Robotron, and others from the best game years.

Laugh all you want, Nintendo-boy.  We liked our games simple, with a single joystick and maybe two buttons.  Cheesy audio and bad graphics were state-of-the-art at the time… and you still felt as if you got your quarter’s worth every time you played.

Flash Fun: an Alice in Wonderland-based audio/mouse-control game

Alice in Wonderland audio book

By now, Web Watch is sure that you’ve seen the trailers for Johnny Depp and Tim Burton’s new Disney film ALICE IN WONDERLAND.

The fact that a film is pending to be released hasn’t stopped game developers from not releasing games that are based on Lewis Carroll’s classic.

Take RECORD TRIPPING, for example – aside from being based on the familar tale of Alice chasing the White Rabbit around Wonderland and encountering the Mad Hatter and other interesting characters, it’s the game mechanics that really set RECORD TRIPPING apart from other online games.

How to win at SURVIVOR or succeed in the real world – it’s all about game theory

Introduction to Game Theory

In a previous post, Web Watch mentioned how GAME THEORY plays an important part in the reality TV show SURVIVOR.

The key to understanding what that means is to know what GAME THEORY is all about.  Luckily, Web Watch has found a way to boil it down into some bite-sized chunks for our faithful Web Watch readers.

Betcha can’t name the Most Played Video Game of All Time

Mobile Gaming Smartphones

Can you name the MOST PLAYED VIDEO GAME OF ALL TIME?

It’s not MS PAC MAN.

It’s not TETRIS.

It’s not even Microsoft Windows’ SOLITAIRE card game (although that one should qualify as the most played video game in the office environment).
