Be more productive instantly: stop filing your email into folders

Overload! How Too Much Information is Hazardous to your Organization
Overload! How Too Much Information is Hazardous to your Organization

On any given day, Web Watch receives between 500-1000 work-related emails.    And we’re not even counting those emails that are routed directly into spam or junk folders.

While that may sound like a lot of email, the vast majority of those messages are informational – things that Web Watch needs to know about, but not anything that we need to actually do anything about.

So we file those away into various folders for future reference if needed, leaving our Inbox mostly clear for those important messages that we actually need to read and take some action on.

But a recent study by IBM has found that maybe Google (and therefore, Google’s approach of how GMail is structured) may be the right way to do things all along.

Build a iPhone App in Less than an Hour

Christina Hendricks from Mad Men knows a little bit about what it takes for a man – a real man – to get her attention.

And back in May 2010, she penned a treatise on the subject entitled A LETTER TO MEN.  It’s just her little way of giving back, to help men everywhere know what they should, and shouldn’t, be doing if they want to score a fantastic woman like that.

Some of the tips she shares are:

Web Watch Rewind: Why do hotels charge for Internet access? Because minibars are on their way out

Running a Bed & Breakfast For Dummies
Running a Bed & Breakfast For Dummies

Web Watch works hard to make sure our readers are ahead of the curve on various topics.  We like to be among the leaders, not a mere follower.

Which is why, when we see articles on CNN about how INTERNET FEES IRRITATE HOTEL GUESTS, we secretly smile and go about our business in bringing you the good stuff, because we know that we already brought up this very same topic about hotel internet fees almost a year ago.

Are you super fat? You can make $90,000 a year by doing practically nothing

What one pound of fat looks like
Model replica of one-pound of fat

Being fat isn’t necessarily good for you.

But Donna Simpson made it work for her.

How?  Donna Simpson was the Guinness World Record holder for “World’s Heaviest Mother” and clocked in at 600 lbs on her 5’2″ frame.

Yeah, that’s a lot of woman.  And we’re sure that Web Watch readers are asking the same thing — when you weigh 600lbs, what can you do to earn a living? It certainly can’t be easy manuevering around a workplace when you’re that big.

Well, you could do what Donna did.

What’s the most popular fast food restaurant? It’s all about who has the most friends.

Fast Food: A History of Wendy's, Arby's, Burger King and Other Popular Fast Food Restaurants
Fast Food: A History of Wendy’s, Arby’s, Burger King
and Other Popular Fast Food Restaurants

When we see a question like the one above (“What’s the most popular fast food restaurant in the world”), the answer can be quite varied.

If you’re talking about the most popular in terms of “french fries”, you’re likely going to be talking about McDonald’s.

If you’re talking about most popular in terms of number of US outlets, then Subway has almost twice as many as the next nearest chain.

No, today we’re going to look at this in a slightly different way — using the power of social marketing and community engagement, Web Watch is going to determine the Most Popular Fast Food Chain, based on the number of Facebook Likes.  (the list of Top Fifty Fast Food Restaurants provided by QSR magazine)

Twitter for Dummies

File this one under “Yet Another Brilliant Idea that Web Watch Didn’t Think of First”.

Of course, first we’d have to get an 81-year-old father who didn’t understand how to use the Internet.

Norman N is just that guy.  And he has a funny kid who decided to bring Dad into the 21st century.

And thus was born Old Man Search

QUESTIONS FROM MEN AND WOMEN
TO THE ADVICE COLUMN OF PLAYBOY MAGAZINE

If you’ve read Playboy magazine over the years (and by “read”, we mean “flipped through the pages to the pictorials, occasionally check out the interview, read the Playboy Funnies, and check out a cartoon or two”), then you should be familiar with Chip Rowe and the rest of the Playboy Advisor staff of intelligent and well-read question-and-answer writers.

Sure, Web Watch could point you to any number of articles about how to secure your wireless router, but why should we do that when Playboy has summed up the steps to take in such an easy-to-understand manner and pleasant packaging?

Your passwords still suck: a continuation of our conversation

Computer Biometric Finger Scan
Computer Biometric Finger Scan

Password security is an oft-discussed topic here on Web Watch – we’ve covered it with a list of the most common passwords, how kids select passwords, and how “TIGGER” is not a good password, among other topics.

So when some more password analysis became available due to the recent security breach at Sony, Web Watch felt it was important to share again how bad people can be with picking passwords – which should help reiterate how important it is for our Web Watch readers to have a good password policy of their own.

How to maximize your gadget shopping dollar

Have you purchased a computer lately?

Once you get past the initial “MAC vs Windows” discussion, the choices typically come down to price variations.  Web Watch has always said — and it’s been holding true for the past 20 years or so — that the “ideal” computer that any computer nerd would want will cost about $2,000.

You’d be surprised that the $2k number holds up, even in today’s retail environment where a decent home computer can be had for around $500.  Note that we said that this was a computer ideal for a computer nerd, not just any machine that would get somebody through the next two years of English class at the local university.

And that’s because that $2000 computer is one that is going to last for a number of years because it has all the bells and whistles for today, and will likely not need to be upgraded anytime soon.

But Web Watch understands that not everyone has $2k in their back pocket. Which brings up that more important question:  if you had limited funds with which to buy or outfit a computer, WHAT SHOULD THE MONEY BE SPENT ON?
