10 Epic Pop Culture Fails

How to write link bait
How to Write Linkbait

10 Epic Pop Culture Fails is an example of a linkbait headline.

LINK BAIT IS A TERM USED BY INTERNET MARKETERS to indicate a type of writing that is used to generate interest in your subject matter.  Basically, anything that you write that can get people blogging about what you’ve written, discussing it on forums, watching it on TV, buying your magazine, posting on social websites like del.icio.us — all can be categorized as “link bait”.

Today’s Fun Sites: Crap Our Kids Made vs Crap Our Kids Ruined

Harold and the Purple Crayon
Harold and the Purple Crayon

If you have kids (or have friends that do), chances are that you have seen first-hand both the destruction that kids can do to practically anything of value in the home, as well as the “art” that the parents feel they need to hang on their office wall to share with their co-workers.

So today, Web Watch takes a look at these two sides of the child-rearing coin:

Mr. Dormouse’s Animated Album Covers and Rock Cats ROCK

Animusic
Animusic – Animated Music Video

We all have those nifty MP3 audio programs, such as WINAMP or WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER that display funky animations on screen when the audio is playing.

And on our iPod / iPhone / Android devices, the music players will display the static album cover as artwork in order to give you something to look at while you’re scanning through your music library.

So why not put the two ideas together?

Justin Bieber wants you to check out his bowl cut!

Flowbee

Web Watch knows that our Web Watch readers have tons of embarrassing photos of themselves from when they were younger and lacked any sort of fashion sense or humility.

Didn’t everyone have that plaid pants/white belt combo?  Yeah, thought so… we think it was required dress code for the under-8 set.

But think about your parents, trying to save a buck or two by doing basic haircuts at home instead of taking the kids to Supercuts or Great Clips or the local mall salon that charges you $20 just to ask the receptionist a question.

Unhappy hipsters. (If you don’t know what that means, maybe it’s you.)

Fuzz the Hipster

Are you a hipster?

Do you live in some hip world full of other hip people?  Constantly gazing off into the distance from your hipster pad while you listen to all that hipster post-modern music?

Do you have an ironic goatee?

Is being a hipster all it’s cracked up to be?  Maybe YOU’RE AN UNHAPPY HIPSTER.

RUNNING FROM CAMERA is a funny blog idea

The Runaways

RUNNING FROM CAMERA is a funny original blog idea.

Muggezifter, the blog creator, had a great idea for original self-portraits.

He sets the camera down on a stable surface (or has a friend/stranger hold the camera), sets the self-timer for 2 seconds, and then runs away from the camera as fast as possible.

Yup, can’t be any simpler than that.

Certainly makes those staged posed photos on your next vacation seem a bit old-fashioned, doesn’t it?

How much money can you make by blogging? Try $7.50/hour

Secrets to Blogging to a 6-figure salary

Bloggers, being the new century journalists that they are (yes, we’re thinking of you Perez!), have to walk a fine line between the low-cost of entry to the world of online publishing and the low-cost return on investment they get on what they’re writing about.

This does explain the current glut of blog-as-book deals that Web Watch has shown you over the past few months, because mama bloggers gotta eat, and blogging by itself just isn’t enough to pay the bills.

News flash: Wearing a Superman t-shirt does not mean you’re dressed as Superman

In YET ANOTHER NOSTALGIA BLOG-TURNED-POSSIBLE-EXPLOITATIVE BOOK DEAL, Web Watch points you to GROWING UP HEROES, a photoblog of old family photos that have been submitted by the site’s readers.

In this case, the family photos are of children (and others) dressed up as their favorite superheroes.

RealEstalker gives Inside Scoop on Celebrity Homes

Maps to Celebrity Homes

We’ve previously covered how to LOCATE CELEBRITY HOMES ON GOOGLE here on Web Watch, and it seems to have been a hit with a number of Web Watch’s visitors.

So we thought we’d offer another way for tourists to look around and gawk at those places that celebrities call home when the celebrities aren’t invading our living rooms through that magic talking box in the corner.

Do the math: Warren Beatty slept with a woman every 1.17 days

STAR: How Warren Beatty Seduced America

In Peter Biskind’s new book about Warren Beatty, STAR: HOW WARREN BEATTY SEDUCED AMERICA, we learn that Warren Beatty has allegedly slept with over 12,000 different women.

Approximately 12,775 - if you believe what the book says.

While there may be some Web Watch readers who will applaud Warren for coming anywhere close to even 1/4 of that number, there will be a large number of folks who will believe that Warren has completed all those conquests… and more… without question.

And that is where Web Watch can step in.  Because bedding 12,775 partners seems a bit over-achieving to us.

And apparently, we’re not alone in this thinking.

Guess what? Your fancy Chinese character tattoo doesn’t say what you think it says.

Essential KanjiSome would say that if you’re one of those people who feel the need to have a tattoo on your arm, neck, lower back, calf, or other seen (or unseen) body part that is not in your native language, then you deserve what you get.

You might have asked for your initials to be displayed in Kanji, but you may end up with something entirely different and not necessarily something that you would like to have.

Wedinator: What you DON’T want to see in your wedding album

Wedding Photography PosesWeb Watch has seen our share of wacky wedding photos:

  • There’s the “let’s take the disposable wedding cameras from the tables and take inappropriate naked photos” gag
  • The ever-popular “photos of the entire wedding party (as a group, and individually) licking the ice sculpture centerpiece” routine
  • And the “groomsmen wear gorilla suits to the reception” act.

Yup, Web Watch has been there for all of these.

But we can be glad that – when compared to the images seen on WEDINATOR – that the happy couple were usually part of the gag and were willing participants in the photos at some level.  Just like CAKE WRECKS and other photoblogs, Wedinator takes those unintentionally funny wedding photos and shares them with the world.

Bitter is the New Black : Confessions of a Condescending, Egomaniacal, Self-Centered Smartass,Or, Why You Should Never Carry A Prada Bag to the Unemployment OfficePreviously, Web Watch has pointed you in the direction of STUFF WHITE PEOPLE LIKE and similar sites that point a satirical finger at stereotypes… and in the process, getting a book deal out of it.

STUFF UNEMPLOYED PEOPLE LIKE is yet another one of those sites, looking to cash in on other people’s misery, using the stereotype of the unemployed to find their humor.

The Ideal Toolbox: WD-40 for things that should move, and duct tape for things that shouldn’t

Duct Tape and WD-40It has been said that the ideal toolbox will only contain two things:  WD-40 for things that should move, and a roll of duct tape for things that shouldn’t.

Web Watch would throw into that toolbox a hammer, a bundle of zipties, and a Leatherman.

All of these are the perfect tools to use to fix any situation, and
