The 27 Rules of Conquering the Gym

12 hassle-free exercises that you can do while watching TV
12 hassle-free exercises that you can do while watching TV

Now that we’re fully into the new year, it’s time to revisit that age-old New Year’s Resolution, GOING TO THE GYM MORE OFTEN.

Those of us who are smart will take the first six weeks of the year and NOT go to the gym on a regular basis, as then we have to deal with the newbie idiots who’ve never been to the gym before but feel that it’s necessary in order to Feel Good About Themselves Because They’re Sticking to their New Year’s Resolution.

Those people can suck it, because they’re not going to be around the gym any more after the Super Bowl is over.  We all know that January is the worst time to try to use the gym since it’s more crowded than it needs to be.

How to be a Cirque du Soleil Contortionist

Cirque Du Soleil Anniversary Collection
Cirque Du Soleil Anniversary Collection

At last count, Web Watch has seen 14 different Cirque du Soleil shows –which, at an average ticket price of $100 apiece, plus concessions and otherwise, means that we’ve spent a hell of a lot of money on Guy Laliberte’s entertainment empire.

And every cent so far we consider money well spent.  Each production has been thoroughly entertaining and exciting.

One question we’re oft wondered is what it takes to be a Cirque du Soleil performer.  And while a lot of this was answered in the phenomenal reality series FIRE WITHIN on Bravo (seriously, it was awesome!), the question still remains about the physicality of what those performers do and how they do it.

10 Rules for Walking on the Sidewalk (stop, move, or get out of our way!)

Where the Sidewalk Ends
Where the Sidewalk Ends

Web Watch has worked in New York City.  We’ve fought the crowds there, and frankly — rush hour there is absolutely everything you think it would be.

It’s crowded, it’s smelly – and the successful NYC commuters all have this “look”.  The “don’t talk to me, don’t look at me, I’m not looking at you, get out of my way” look.  Nobody is stopping to smell the roses or window shop or take a look around them at what some call the Most Amazing City In The World.

Nope, they’re too busy making sure that they don’t run into those tourists who wander New York City with their mouths agape, staring up at the tall buildings while they fumble their Kodak Instamatic disposable camera from their safe-and-secure fanny pack.

Jogging may be good for you, but you look like hell doing it

Buy RUN! by Dean Karnazes

Jogging may be good for you, but people who do it really look like hell while doing so.

Have you ever taken a good look at yourself while you’re exercising?  Web Watch has.  There’s a reason why we don’t work out any place where we can be seen – it’s just not a pretty thing to watch.

That’s why we really shouldn’t be surprised at the POST-RUN PHOTO ESSAY compiled by Sacha Goldberger.

If you had to do just one exercise for the rest of your life, which would you choose?

The Luscious Bellydance Workout for Beginners
The Luscious Bellydance Workout for Beginners

The NYTimes recently posed the question, WHAT’S THE SINGLE BEST EXERCISE?

The writers spoke with physicians, physiologists, and even a professor of sport and exercise science (and also a past Olympian) for their opinions, and they were able to come to a single conclusion.

Want to raise your metabolic rate? Try butchering animals.

The Resting Metabolic Rate Debate
The Resting Metabolic Rate Debate

Do you know what your METABOLIC RATE is when doing various activities around the house?

Better yet – do you know which day-to-day functions offer the best (or worst) exercise based on the amount of metabolic activity they provide?

A number of doctors and researchers have updated the COMPENDIUM OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES that lists and allows you to compare the MET of each activity you select, and it’s been published in the Official Journal of the American College of Sports Medicine.  The MET is a standard ”metabolic intensity level” metric that allows different studies that look at health-related data to all be based on the same overall measurement standard.

In other words, two different studies on running can use the same MET value associated with running when working out their math.

If it helps, 1 MET is the standard intensity level when a person is resting and just sitting down, relaxing.  Sleeping offers the lowest MET of 0.9.  The highest MET is 18, and can be obtained by running 10.9 MPH.

Now that we know what the range is, here is a list of MET intensity levels for doing various other activities:
