Official Rules for your Holiday/Christmas/White Elephant Gift Exchange

Blue raffle tickets
Roll of Blue Raffle Tickets: Keep This Ticket

Every year, the question comes up regarding how to properly do a gift exchange at holiday time.

Whether you call it a DIRTY SANTA, WHITE ELEPHANT, YANKEE SWAP, CHINESE AUCTION or something else, the basic concept is the same: everyone brings a gift, throws it into the pile, and then they get distributed out in some random manner, with stealing gifts from other people allowed to some degree.

Web Watch is here to present the OFFICIAL RULES FOR GIFT EXCHANGING that we’ve perfected over the years at our own shindigs. These rules work for us — they should work for you, too.

We’ve got the ultimate list of tacky Christmas light displays right here

Christmas Light Show Music Programming Master 2.0 Holiday Lighting Control Software
Light Show Master 2.0 Holiday Lighting Control Software -
perfect for creating your own Music-Synchronized Holiday Light Display

About 20 years ago, Web Watch was lucky enough to attend a Toys for Tots benefit event, where each new, unwrapped toy allowed you to hop onto a beaten-up school bus with 40 other people and a keg of beer, and drive all over the countryside looking at the area’s craziest Christmas light displays for an hour.

Along the way, the bus driver got lost in the boonies, and the 60-minute scheduled trip ended up taking three hours (requiring an extra stop at a late-night liquor store for additional road supplies and a much-needed bathroom stop).  Needless to say, we did our own Tacky Light Tour the following year with much better success at getting home on time.

Fast-forward 20 years, and we can see how the Internet has really changed things dramatically when it comes to viewing Christmas light displays.

The Swingin' Christmas Party
The Swingin’ Christmas Party

Ah, the annual holiday office party.

Typically, an open bar.  Music. Dancing. Canoodling in the coat closet.  Yes, they can be fun on so many levels… but you have to be careful.  Web Watch recalls attending an office party where the boss had to carry a passed-out employee out to a waiting taxi.

Which brings up today’s question:  WHAT TO DO TO SURVIVE THE OFFICE HOLIDAY PARTY?

Retailer’s Christmas Report Card: Victoria’s Secret is on the “naughty” list, of course

Happy Festivus
Happy Festivus

For years, retailers have been struggling with whether to go the route of political correctness to avoid offending any group that was left out of holiday advertising and promotions, or just go with the majority rule.

Companies instructed salespeople to say “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas”… and this generic greeting ended up insulting and angering millions of people for not recognizing the Reason for the (Shopping) Season.

It ends up that the AMERICAN FAMILY ASSOCIATION has been keeping a list of who has been naughty (those retailers who insist on being all-inclusive with their holiday messages) and who has been nice (retailers that proudly proclaim “Merry Christmas”).

The History of the Green Bean Casserole

Green Bean Casserole
Green Bean Casserole

Every year at Thanksgiving, families across the country descend upon their local grocery store and clear the shelves of French’s Fried Onions, Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom Soup, and cans of green beans – all in the name of recreating that traditional holiday side dish of GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE.

But did you know that this fabulous holiday treat isn’t necessarily as traditional as you might think?  It was created by the Campbell’s Soup Company as a way to sell more soup.

Black Friday comes early: major retailers to open on Thanksgiving instead

Black Friday
Black Friday

Thanksgiving is coming soon, and with it that annual rite-of-passage called BLACK FRIDAY.

You know – that’s the day that everyone wakes up extra early during a 4-day holiday weekend (if they go to sleep at all) and trudge the family out to the local mall to see if there are any bargains to be had.

Web Watch will save you some trouble — we’ve looked at a number of the ads for this year, and all we can say is “eh”. Sure, go out and buy something if you absolutely need it, but we didn’t see anything that is making us plan on losing sleep.

How to Get Ahead at Work: Sleep with the Boss

Should I Sleep with the Boss?: And 99 Other Questions about Having a Great Career
Should I Sleep with the Boss?: And 99 Other Questions about Having a Great Career

7%.

That’s the percentage of people who have admitted to SLEEPING WITH THEIR BOSS IN ORDER TO ADVANCE THEIR CAREER.

Let’s repeat that:  7%

Do you know what 7% looks like?  Sure, you could do the easy math and say that it’s just 7 people out of your office of 100 employees.

That’s not so bad.

But if you work in a smaller office — let’s say an office of around 14 people… then take another look.  7% is the same as 1 in 14 people.  So you have to ask yourself – which one of those people are doing it?  You know they are – statistics don’t lie.  Besides, 17% of those surveyed said that sleeping with the boss was perfectly fine.
