How to escape the police in a high-speed car chase

Lego City Police Chase 3648
Lego City Police Chase 3648

Web Watch would never suggest that you ever evade the police by providing this information to our readers.

Think of this merely as an explanation of how all those criminals manage to escape getting into police custody in those high-action summer movies.

You, being a law-abiding citizen, would pull over immediately upon seeing the flashing blue lights in your rearview mirror, right?  Right.

Be more productive instantly: stop filing your email into folders

Overload! How Too Much Information is Hazardous to your Organization
Overload! How Too Much Information is Hazardous to your Organization

On any given day, Web Watch receives between 500-1000 work-related emails.    And we’re not even counting those emails that are routed directly into spam or junk folders.

While that may sound like a lot of email, the vast majority of those messages are informational – things that Web Watch needs to know about, but not anything that we need to actually do anything about.

So we file those away into various folders for future reference if needed, leaving our Inbox mostly clear for those important messages that we actually need to read and take some action on.

But a recent study by IBM has found that maybe Google (and therefore, Google’s approach of how GMail is structured) may be the right way to do things all along.

Recession-proof careers
The Idiots Guide to Recession-proof Careers

Just like everyone else, Web Watch knows lots of people who have been affected by this recession. Some of those have been out of work for over three years now, and their career prospects are not looking up.

It’s not their fault necessarily, it could just be that the career path they chose may not be the best ones to make it through a recession in the long haul.  Maybe it’s time to switch careers.

But if you do decide to make a switch, what should you switch to?  Well, here’s a list of 10 RECESSION-PROOF JOBS that you may want to consider:

What to wear to a job interview (and some things not to wear)

Can I Wear My Nose Ring to the Interview?: A Crash Course in Finding, Landing, and Keeping Your First Real Job
Can I Wear My Nose Ring to the Interview?:
A Crash Course in Finding, Landing, and Keeping Your First Real Job

Not everyone knows what to wear to a job interview.

Yeah, the traditional suit should still work, but in today’s wacky world of “business casual” or “jeans Fridays”, the potential job seeker sometimes chooses the wrong outfits to appear at the potential future office with.

The good interviewer will share what the usual “around the office” dress code is, but that doesn’t mean that the applicant should show up in the same type of clothes in order to fit in. You don’t have the job yet, Bucko, so leave the flip-flops at home.  Flip-flops don’t belong in the office anyway.

So what should the applicant wear?  Well, you can never go wrong with a suit — unless you know ahead of time that the office is a bit more casual, in which case go with some nice slacks and dress shirt (but lose the tie).

How to get a raise from your boss: just be a jerk

I Hate People!: Kick Loose from the Overbearing and Underhanded Jerks at Work and Get What You Want Out of Your Job
I Hate People!: Kick Loose from the Overbearing and Underhanded Jerks at Work
and Get What You Want Out of Your Job

Everybody knows an office jerk.

They’re the ones who yell, scream, pound the table — and in general, make the office a bit miserable for everyone. They may be absolutely fantastic at their job, but that doesn’t mean that people have to like working with them.

Here’s another reason to hate them: they’re probably making more money than you, for doing the exact same thing you’re doing.

So why is that?

The tell-tale signs you’ve entered MANopause

Penis Problems: A Man's Guide
Penis Problems: A Man’s Guide

Thought that would get your attention.

But apparently, “manopause” – the male version of menopause – is no laughing matter.  Especially when the official name is “andropause“.  It is caused by lower testosterone levels as men get older.

According to the book Penis Problems: A Men’s Guide, there are three distinctive changes that men may notice in their Frank and Beans as they get older.  Two of them are:

Here’s why nobody wants to look at your vacation photos

How to Take Great Vacation Photographs
How to Take Great Vacation Photographs

Web Watch, like many of you, loves to take vacation photos.  We all do it, in part, as a way to remember where we’ve been and seen, but also to capture those moments that we can later reflect upon as being relaxing, happy times with special someones.

Of course, as we review our own vacation photos, they mainly end up being about the food we ate rather than the places we went. C’est la vie.

Decorating the office with Post-It Notes

Post-it Notes
Post-it Notes

When non-destructive, office pranks can be fun.

Filling up somebody’s cubical or office with inflated balloons?  Fun.  Filling up somebody’s cubical or office with Silly String?  A little bit of a mess to clean-up, and usually left to the victim to do so on their own.

Web Watch has even covered an entire office’s items in tin foil and wrapping paper.  Definitely time-consuming and an absolute waste of money, but entertaining.   The best one we did was sheetrocking over the boss’s office door and painting the wall so it looked like the office was never there in the first place.  Oh, we’re still laughing about that one.

But sometimes it’s nice to include others in your office shenanigans.

Give Me Back My Five Bucks: a personal finance guide for young adults

From Ramen to Riches: Building Wealth in Your 20s: Or Spending, Saving, Investing and Managing Your Money to Get Rich Slowly, but Surely
From Ramen to Riches: Building Wealth in Your 20s:
Or Spending, Saving, Investing and Managing Your Money to Get Rich Slowly, but Surely

If there’s one piece of advice that Web Watch is always trying to give to our younger acquaintances, it’s that it’s always better in the long run to save as much money as you can for the future.  A while back, we recommended to try to have $10000 in the bank by the time you’re 30 years old, and that’s still a good rule of thumb to live by (call it your “emergency fund”, it still represents about 3-to-6 months take home pay for the average young adult that financial experts recommend keeping available for emergency purposes).

And Krystal felt the same way when she found herself a 20-something with over $20,000 in debt that she decided she wanted to get rid of.  It was an albatross keeping her from future successes.

10 Rules for Walking on the Sidewalk (stop, move, or get out of our way!)

Where the Sidewalk Ends
Where the Sidewalk Ends

Web Watch has worked in New York City.  We’ve fought the crowds there, and frankly — rush hour there is absolutely everything you think it would be.

It’s crowded, it’s smelly – and the successful NYC commuters all have this “look”.  The “don’t talk to me, don’t look at me, I’m not looking at you, get out of my way” look.  Nobody is stopping to smell the roses or window shop or take a look around them at what some call the Most Amazing City In The World.

Nope, they’re too busy making sure that they don’t run into those tourists who wander New York City with their mouths agape, staring up at the tall buildings while they fumble their Kodak Instamatic disposable camera from their safe-and-secure fanny pack.
