Today’s Challenge: Survive on Minimum Wage for One Month

By web gangsta | Published:

How long has it been since you were in college?

Remember how awesome it was to just head out to the university cafeteria and eat everything you wanted, just because you could?  Hey – it was like an unlimited Las Vegas buffet, but without the cover charge.  Unlimited pizza. Unlimited ice cream. Unlimited single-patty burgers (double-patty burgers only allowed on your first trip through the grill line).

Yeah, there’s a reason it’s called the Freshman 15, and it has nothing to do with the free beer you’re sucking down on weekends, either.

Who does all the work?

By web gangsta | Published:

Hopefully, you’ve been on the Internet long enough for someone (likely, a parent) to have forwarded to you the following old meme about how tired you are from being overworked:

Yes, I’m tired.

For several years I’ve been blaming it on getting older, lack of sleep, weekend projects, stale office air, poor nutrition, carrying a couple of extra pounds, raising a family, recent ailments, and a dozen other reasons that make you wonder why life is getting tough.

But now I found out what’s really happening! I’m tired because I’m overworked.

The population of the USA reached 300 million last October.

79 million of the population are retired. That leaves 221 million to do the work.

There are 19 million toddlers and 76 million students in schools, which leaves 126 million to do the work.

Of that total, 21 million are unemployed leaving 105 million to do the work.

Then you take away 34 million in hospitals and that leaves 71 million to do the work.

43 million are in prisons and that’s 28 million left to do the work.

Now take away 14,683,468 federal, 5,344,722 state and 5,370,743 city workers who run our government and you’re left with 2,601,067 to do the work.

Take away the 2,601,065 people in the armed forces and that leaves just two people to do the work, you and me.

And you’re just sitting there reading this!

No wonder I’m tired!!!

6 Government Agencies to Avoid Working For

By web gangsta | Published:

Some say that the ideal job is one with the government. Not a lot of oversight, great (or at least reasonable) benefits, retirement is taken care of, relatively stress-free, etc.

In other words, once you have a job with the government, you’re pretty much set.

But there can be a downside to working for the Fed.

What’s the one job perk 40% of all workers want?

By web gangsta | Published:

How happy are you in your current job?

If you’re not that happy, what would it take for you to consider leaving your current place of work and joining a different company?

Would more money make you happy, or are you so miserable that you would take a pay cut just to get out of the situation you’re in?

80% of office workers hate the same person

By web gangsta | Published:

The workplace can be a stressful place.

The job aside, there’s the whole political game going on, where everybody is jockeying to be in the next position available for career advancement.  Yeah, it may be a jungle out there, but the office jungle can be a pretty rough place too.

Some get in trouble for not speaking up enough; others get in trouble for speaking up too much.  How do you find the balance between the two?

What job has the lowest (or highest) unemployment rate?

By web gangsta | Published:

Some people love the job they have, and would never leave it for anything.

Others will work a job for as long as they have to until something they perceive is better comes along.

Web Watch knows one person who quit their job, just because.  Didn’t have a go-to position, but just didn’t like what they were doing and then decided to try to “find themselves”.  They ended up taking a non-professional job just to get their foot in the door of an industry that interested them, and then quit that one a few weeks later.  For these types of people, a job is not a lifelong dream of a career built on love, but just as a means for bringing in some money to survive until the end of the week.

The 11 Worst Companies in America to Work For

By web gangsta | Published:

Everybody has a career line item that you’ve considered leaving off your resume for various reasons.

For some, it’s because you don’t want to acknowledge ever having worked at that company.  For others, it’s because the job was so horrible that you didn’t even make it an entire year.

Maybe you were asked to leave, as a mutually beneficial decision.  Maybe you just left your ID badge on your desk, walked out without a word to anyone, and quietly slipped out while nobody was watching.

Regardless of your reasons for hating your job, you should rest happy knowing one thing:

Top Paying Jobs for Women

Laurie Anderson released the song “BEAUTIFUL RED DRESS” (from her album Strange Angels) in 1989. Some of the lyrics included these lines:

well they say women shouldn’t be the president
cause they go crazy from time to time
well push my button baby here I am
yeah look out baby I’m at high tide

I’ve got a beautiful red dress
and you’d look really good standing beside it..

ok! ok! hold it! I just want to say something
you know, for every dollar a man makes a woman makes 63 cents
now, fifty years ago that was 62 cents.
so, with that kind of luck,
it’ll be the year 3,888 before we make a buck

Do you prefer to work alone? There’s a job for you out there…

Proof that all Facebook users are alcoholic, drug-taking, irresponsible losers

By web gangsta | Published:

They say that everything that you post on the Internet becomes part of the public record, and could affect you down the road if a potential employer decides to do a little social media digging to see whether you really would be a good employee or not.

Sure, some things could be attributed to a little venting in your status updates, but there’s also the possibility of trends emerging that you may not see unless you’re looking at your profile with a fresh set of eyes.

Name something you should have on your desk at work

By web gangsta | Published:

Web Watch knows that not everyone has a standard “desk” job in an office.

You know – the one where you may be sitting in a cubical farm or an actual office (with a door), where you and your co-workers all get together to generate some sort of product for your company.

Some office managers frown upon personalizing one’s workspace, while companies like Pixar go out of their way to encourage as much creativity as possible (one Pixar employee build a speakeasy in the back of his cubicle area, complete with secret hidden entrance!).

How to tell if you’re about to be fired

By web gangsta | Published:

Getting fired is like a rite of passage.

Especially in today’s economic climate, if you haven’t been fired or laid off at least once in your professional career, you can consider yourself one of the lucky ones.

How bad is it out there for the unemployed?  Web Watch knows a number of people who have had difficulty trying to find a regular full-time job in their career of choice – some of whom are going on five years of unemployment.

Five years is a long-time to sit there and wonder when the economy is going to turn around – but frankly, the issue could be just as likely that the job those job-seekers are looking for isn’t available.  There are plenty of jobs to be had — the problem is whether those unemployed are willing to make an industry change, go back to school, or even move across the country if a job prospects are more available elsewhere.

Quitting your job in spectacular fashion

By web gangsta | Published:

Have you ever quit your job?

Web Watch knows someone who didn’t actually quit their job – they just stopped showing up while they went to work elsewhere.  The employer kept paying them and kept them on the payroll for months, before figuring out that person wasn’t going to come back.  It was more of a quiet, subtle quit process.

But quitting can bring such joy to people, if they do it with passion.

The 10 Worst Job Uniforms for All Time

By web gangsta | Published:

Some offices let their workers enjoy “casual Fridays”, where employees can trade in their khakis and button-down shirts for Levis and polo shirts.

Web Watch knows of one company where they require the staff to wear suits to work once a month (every other day is a “business casual” environment).

And don’t get Web Watch started on those companies we’ve visited where some women feel that flip-flops are appropriate for the office.  We already know that shouldn’t be allowed, no matter what organization you’re in.
