Thank you, Ralph Bruno, for inventing the Cheesehead hat

Cheesehead Hat

Foam hats of different designs have become ubiquitious at sporting events around the world.

From the original CHEESEHEAD first worn in 1987 at a White Sox/Brewers baseball game by inventor Ralph Bruno, to paws, bird claws, horseshoes, or any other mascot figure under the sun — you have FOAMATION to thank for your team spirit.

No surprise: the 2010 Carolina Panthers are the least exciting team in the NFL

Carolina Panthers Sir Purr Bobblehead
Carolina Panthers Sir Purr Bobblehead

The WALL STREET JOURNAL has reported that the CAROLINA PANTHERS WERE THE LEAST EXCITING TEAM IN THE NFL this season.

Can’t say that we disagree, considering that would be one explanation of how the Panthers “earned” their number one draft pick in the next NFL draft.

Cheer for Science! Cheer for Cheerleaders! Hooray for Science Cheerleaders!

Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader outfit
Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader Outfit

Ever wonder what professional sports cheerleaders do in their real lives?

Because they certainly can’t make a living on PROFESSIONAL CHEERLEADING alone, making from $50-$100 per game each season, you’re going to need something else to fall back on to support yourself.

Like a “real” job.

The Football Fan’s Guide to Wearing Your Team’s Jersey

Carolina Panthers Football Jersey - Steve Smith
Carolina Panthers Football Jersey – Steve Smith

If you’re a REAL football fan, you have at least one jersey in your closet to wear on game day.

At least one, because you have to have one of each team color – and perhaps some older jerseys of players you no longer care to support because the quit the team or were traded to the enemy.  God forbid that you go to a game wearing a jersey for a team that isn’t even playing that day…

Suffice it to say, there are a lot of RULES REGARDING THE RIGHT AND WRONG WAY TO WEAR A FOOTBALL JERSEY, thanks to our friend Josh.  Since it’s in the middle of football season right now, why not have a little refresher?  Here are three of the rules Josh pulled together — and he’s dead-on with his other observations.

An obvious (and unfortunate) side-effect of the “Root Suit”

Full Body Spandex Suit - Morph Suit
Full-body Spandex Morphsuit (pick your color)

So the other day, Web Watch was participating in the monthly WOOT-OFF when we saw them talking about the ROOT SUIT

We know you’ve seen the ROOT SUIT on TV this football season — it’s been featured gameday wear for any number of collegiate and NFL football fans eager to get on TV but without having to show their face.

There are other versions and names out there: the MORPH SUIT,  Zentai, a full-body spandex suit, the lycra outfit, the Spiderman getup.  And they’re all the same basic thing — a costume that you can hide in public in.

How better baserunning will win the World Series

Baseball - Skills & Drills: The FUNdamentals of Baserunning
Baseball – Skills & Drills: The FUNdamentals of Baserunning

One thing that Web Watch has trouble understanding is why the baseball season needs to extend out into November.

November is FOOTBALL season, as everyone knows.  Sure, throw in a little pre-season basketball or hockey if you’d like – at least those two are considered “winter” sports.  But baseball already has spring training, the boys of summer, and the fall classic.  Why do they need to bogart the winter season as well – it’s not like baseball is played outdoors in all types of weather, like we see with real sports like football.  Let’s keep the baseball playoffs to the fall months and be done with it.

Maybe the issue is that baseball players don’t really understand how to play the game.

You know that PERFECTLY TIMED SPORTS PHOTO that been going around the Internet this last week?

You know the one – it’s where Tiger Woods hit an errant chip shot at this year’s RYDER CUP that went directly at a photographer’s camera?

Well, we’re not here to talk about Tiger or his golf skill… we’re here to talk about THE CIGAR GUY. He’s the one that turned a phenomenal golf photo into an Internet sensation.

Most tailgate party cooks prefer chicken or burgers; Some spend over $1000/year on tailgates

Weber's Way to Grill: The Step-by-Step Guide to Expert Grilling
Weber’s Way to Grill: The Step-by-Step Guide to Expert Grilling

Web Watch knows that there’s nothing that tastes better than some meat cooked fresh on the grill.

And when it’s football season, you have to have a grill to really do the tailgate up right.  Web Watch even won a Weber Grill a few years ago in a football tailgating cookoff contest with our grilled steak sandwich with carmelized onions.  One of the judges even came back to our setup and took an extra sandwich with them “for the road” when the competition was over.

So we have that going for us.

Which brings us back to today’s point – that when it comes to tailgating and grilling, nobody knows their stuff better than the folks over at Weber.

Which is why every year Weber releases their own WEBER TAILGATING STUDY, a look at the tailgating habits that we should expect to see this upcoming football season.

How much money do competitive eaters make? On a per-calorie basis, not a whole lot of dough

Eat This Book: A Year of Gorging and Glory on the Competitive Eating Circuit
Eat This Book: A Year of Gorging and Glory on the Competitive Eating Circuit

Competitive eating is not everything you may think it is.  It’s not all glory on the playing field, and unless you really want to devote your life to travelling around the country in order to eat yourself silly, there really isn’t enough money to be made in eating contests to call being a “Professional Eater” a full-time career.

One has to wonder if the lack of cost-of-living raises is one of the reasons that Takeru Kobayashi, the former World Champion Hot Dog Eater, refused to sign a contract with the IFOCE and ended up rushing the stage at this year’s Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest.

And considering the amount of effort that the IFOCE and ESPN put into making the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest and its world-famous Mustard Yellow Belt a cultural lynchpin in our annual July 4th festivities, it’s really surprising that the NATHAN’S CONTEST WAS NOT THE COMPETITIVE EATING CONTEST WITH THE MOST PRIZE MONEY over the past year.

Why an Athletes’ Creed? Because 81% of athletes surveyed said it’s better to win than play fair

Good Sport
Good Sport

When it comes to sports – and more importantly, how athletes present themselves both on and off the field – times have changed a lot over the past few years.

With Soccer Parents getting into fights with coaches over why their kids aren’t getting enough field time, fighting-enducing trash-talking during a game, athletes climbing into the stands to punch out hecklers, or even some sports where the scoreboard is being taken away entirely “because kids don’t want the pressure to have to win” — the reason for sports to exist in the first place are slowly falling down by the wayside as the “spirit of competition” gives way to “winning at all costs”.
