What is the key of YOUR favorite songs?

Sixpence None the Richer

Remember back when Web Watch told you about how THERE SHE GOES by SIXPENCE NONE THE RICHER was called THE MOST PERFECT SONG EVER RECORDED?  It was called that, in part due to its ideal song length, and for other reasons as well.

While it may not be a way to tell if what you’re listening to is THE perfect song or not, if you’re a LAST.FM user than we can at least identify if the key of your favorite songs all fall into the same ballpark or not.

In other words, do you favor listening to songs that are in the same key or not?

Congratulations, Fresno! You’re America’s Drunkest City!

Drinker's Beer Belt

It wasn’t officially a competition, but we do have a winner (according to the fine folks at MEN’S HEALTH magazine).

By an overwhelming margin, FRESNO, CALIFORNIA HAS BEEN NAMED AMERICA’S DRUNKEST CITY out of 100 entries!  Time to celebrate!

Web Watch is sure that you’re asking how Fresno earned this vaulted honor.  It was quite easy, actually.

Men’s Health took into account the following pieces of information:

  • Death rate from alcoholic liver disease
  • Deaths due to DUI
  • The number of DUI arrests
  • The number of admitted binge drinkers in the past month
  • The severity — or lack thereof — of DUI penalties

Cities were rated on a scale with 1 being the worst in the selected category.  The lower your overall score ended up, the higher your city ranked on the “drunkest city” list.   Let’s take a look, shall we?

We already know that Fresno, California is America’s Drunkest City — but who were the 99 runners-up?

Survey says that it’s okay to send texts while in the bathroom

texting poster

Web Watch agrees with our readers that talking on the phone (whether it be via Bluetooth, hand-held cell, or corded landline) is completely inappropriate when done in the bathroom — public or private.

Nobody wants to hear your conversations while in the stall, and nobody at the other end of the conversation wants to hear the bodily functions of either yourself or your neighbors.

This is why Web Watch is thrilled that chip maker Intel decided to research and publish A STUDY ABOUT PROPER TEXTING ETIQUETTE.

The winner of the 2010 dirtiest hotel in America is in San Francisco. Are you surprised, or not?

Hotel Sleep Sack

We’ve all been travelled a bit across the country and have been disgusted by what we’ve found in a dirty hotel room, right?

Web Watch recalls one hotel we stayed at that was so disgusting that we did everything we could to avoid touching anything in the room (we didn’t have much choice as to where else to stay, and it was only for one night – we figured we could stick it out for a few hours. Of course, we didn’t have a hotel sleep sack to use at the time — that would have been most awesome!).

One year, a travelling companion of ours found a used condom on the floor of her off-strip hotel in Las Vegas. You’d think the cleaning folks would have noticed it was there and destroyed the evidence. (She ended up getting her night comped, but not before subjecting the hotel manager with some very harsh words.)

Even the local news stations have run reports on how you’re not supposed to drink out of the in-room glassware or use the in-room coffee pot at even the fanciest expensive hotels, because those items may not be cleaned in as regular a time period (or in a sanitary way) as a guest would like.  Just saying…

The point is that TripAdvisor has released their list of the TOP 10 DIRTIEST HOTELS IN AMERICA, based on survey results they have received from world travellers.

Think your job sucks? It can’t suck any worse than one of these (where’s Mike Rowe?)

Jobs that Don't Suck

Web Watch has long held the belief that one of the worst jobs one could have would be the editor of a fishing show:

“nothing…. nothing…. nothing…. wait, what’s that?   Oh, never mind.   Nothing… nothing… nothing…”

Yes, we stole that joke from someone, but the sentiment remains the same.  Not all cool-sounding jobs are all they’re cracked up to be.

Some jobs really do suck.  And Mike Rowe and his DIRTY JOBS team has done a great job of showcasing some of those jobs and the people who are proud to do what other folks refuse to try.  But he may have missed one or two jobs along the way.

How many friends do you need? When considering your salary, lots of ‘em

Friends

A recent scientific study that covered 10,000 people over 35 years determined that people have, on average, 150 friends at any one moment in time.

So what does this mean to you, faithful Web Watch reader?

You’re right – on the surface, not so much.

Picking a good password is important. “Tigger” is not a good password.

username password underwear

A recent study has been released that took a look at over 32 million passwords that were published onto the Internet after a hacker broke into the ROCKYOU.COM website.

This is the first time that a password study of this magnitude was able to be performed, but it did confirm a few things about users and the passwords they choose:  PEOPLE ARE NOT PICKING SECURE PASSWORDS FOR THEIR ONLINE ACCOUNTS.

The most common password found online is typically 12345, although the ROCKYOU data had the most common password being 123456, with nearly 1 percent of the ROCKYOU users being that uncreative.  Go figure – that extra digit made it that much harder to hack into the critical ROCKYOU website.

Boosting your metabolism helps you lose weight. Sadly, Twinkies are not the answer

North Beach Diet

One thing Web Watch knows how to do is tell others what they are supposed to do to lose weight.
It’s quite simple – “eat less and exercise more.”

See how easy it is to say that?  The hard part, as we all know, is actually following through with the advice that we freely give to others.  Web Watch may not practice what we preach, but we’re really not the kind of people we would preach to anyway.

So let’s pretend that you’re already trying to eat a sensible breakfast, healthy lunch, and small portions at dinner.  You’re exercising a little bit every day as best you can, but you haven’t really noticed any real differences yet.

Maybe all you need to do, since you’re doing everything else right, is to kickstart your metabolism a little.  Here are a few suggestions that you can try:

Q: How many different chemicals do women put on their face every day? A: 515

Barbie Make-Up

HOW MANY DIFFERENT CHEMICALS DO WOMEN PUT ON THEIR FACES EVERY DAY?

A UK company, Bionsen, determined that the average woman puts 515 different chemicals on her face every day, using a combination of makeup, perfumes, mascara, and other products.

The average woman uses 13 different products daily, and each product contains at least 20 different ingredients — lipsticks and other makeup average 30 ingredients, and some perfumes can have as many as 400 different ingredients.

It gets scarier from there.  You pay attention to the labels on food you eat, but have you paid attention to the ingredient list on your personal grooming products… if those products even contain ingredient lists in the first place?
