Top 12 Most Overrated Jobs in the World

How to Better Hate Your Job
How to Better Hate Your Job

Web Watch knows that there are people out there who absolutely love what they do for work.  They wake up happy, go to work happy, come home happy.

Some jobs are just designed that way – to provide happiness.

Other jobs are more drudgery, and are done because somebody needs to do it and get paid for it.

CareerCast recently did a survey of the most overrated jobs, basing criteria on stress levels, physical demands, possible employment outlook down the road, regulatory or other pressures in the workplace,

Study proves that men really are funnier than women

Queens of Comedy: Lucille Ball, Phyllis Diller, Carol Burnett, Joan Rivers,
and the New Generation of Funny Women
(Studies in Humor and Gender)

Web Watch has heard from many entertainment professionals that men are always going to be funnier than women.

Jerry Lewis said it, others have as well.

Heck, we’ve seen this play out in real life — with women-based comedies often getting short-changed at the movie theater (until Bridesmaids came along to prove everyone wrong).  TV is a different story, with female-lead comedies often leading the ratings, until something Horribly Wrong happens to have those shows suddenly and mysteriously cancelled.

Rosanne?  Laverne & Shirley?  The Lucy Show?   All written by men, we’ll guess.

Even Tina Fey, when she was head writer at SNL, said that it was tough to be a woman working in a man’s world.

What are you doing to afford holiday shopping this year?

Mrs. Pinchpenny's Guide to Surviving the Holidays on a Budget
Mrs. Pinchpenny’s Guide to Surviving the Holidays on a Budget

With the holidays around the corner, people are starting to think about ways that they can get gifts for their families and friends without breaking the budget (assuming that they even have a holiday spending budget in the first place!).

A recent survey from COUPON CABIN of almost 2,500 people asked how people were going to afford the holidays this year, and this is some of what they found:

Spoiler Alert! Spoilers are GOOD for you! (Psst: Vader is Luke’s Father)

Spoiler Alert: Bruce Willis Is Dead and 399 More Endings from Movies, TV, Books, and Life
Spoiler Alert: Bruce Willis Is Dead and
399 More Endings from Movies, TV, Books, and Life

Rosebud is a sled.

It was Earth all along.

Soylent Green is people.

Snape kills Dumbledore.

No longer is it safe to save a favorite movie, book, or TV show for later enjoyment if you want to avoid having the ending spoiled.  Web Watch has mentioned before that we were successfully able to avoid hearing about the ending of THE SIXTH SENSE until we finally saw the film ourselves on DVD.  Yes, we knew there was some general plot twist, but we always were able to avoid any in-depth conversation about it until many months after the film had been released.

And that was before Twitter and the #spoiler or #spoileralert hashtags came into play.  We’ve gotten into online battles with friends who are active on various social media sites who have become angry about conversations on shows that they haven’t seen yet, but were pissed that they just happened to come across someone else’s comment.

Dude, if you don’t want to know what happened, then stay the hell off of Twitter.  How the hell are WE supposed to know what you have or haven’t seen yet?

Are you an unmarried couple that’s living together? Your kids hate you.

WHY MARRIAGE MATTERS: THIRTY CONCLUSIONS FROM THE SOCIAL SCIENCES from the Center for Marriage and Families at the Institute for American Values and the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia was recently released.

And if you are a couple with children that happen to be unmarried (“living in sin” is what our parents called it, back when “sin” was a bit more inflammatory than it is today), then you have set your children up on an unhealthy spiral as they grow older.

Some of the results from the study include:

The Best Companies to work for? How about “Where do YOU want to work most?”

The 100 Best Companies to Work for in America
The 100 Best Companies to Work for in America

We’ve all seen those lists of the TOP COMPANIES TO WORK FOR, based on survey results that cover all sorts of topics like their work-from-home/telecommuting policies, time off, healthcare benefits, and other aspect – both tangible and not so much.

But a list of the TOP COMPANIES TO WORK FOR will only go so far – because the majority of those lists are usually family-friendly, local organizations that know how to cater towards their employees.

And there’s nothing wrong with that.  If you are one of the lucky people working for one of those organizations, then good for you.  You’re already there.

The Top Ten TV Theme Songs, 1980 through 2011

Favorite TV Theme Songs
Favorite TV Theme Songs

Kids growing up today have absolutely no idea what a true TV theme song is.

Now, they turn on any of the CSI shows and get a song from The Who.  They turn on Law & Order and get a “bum-bummmmm”.  They turn on Survivor and, depending on the intricacies of the episode plotline may either get the long-form, short-form, or some variation in-between of the show’s intro.

Web Watch was having lunch the other day with a group of people that included a woman who had recently moved to the United States after having grown up in a number of foreign countries.

National Coffee Day is September 29th

How to Open a Financially Successful Coffee, Espresso & Tea Shop
How to Open a Financially Successful Coffee, Espresso & Tea Shop

Ah, coffee.

For some, the smell of coffee is the equivalent of a new morning, a fresh day ahead.

Starbucks and other gourmet coffee shops have brainwashed the world into believing a $4 cup of coffee is superior to anything that you can brew at home for pennies a cup (we’ve since learned that’s not true – otherwise, why would those same coffee shops be selling coffee beans to take home for self-brewing?).

80% of couples live together before getting married

Living Together: A Legal Guide for Unmarried Couples
Living Together: A Legal Guide for Unmarried Couples

Living together before marriage: it’s not exactly a growing trend, it’s just something that’s been done for years and years.

Heck, if you want to get technical, Adam and Eve “lived together” in Biblical times.  There certainly wasn’t a priest around to make their arrangement an official “marriage”, if you will.

And while Web Watch knows that some parents are perfectly fine with the permanent roommate situation that living together brings, we also know of some couples who purposefully hide their living arrangements from the parental units.  It’s all about avoiding the wrath and disappointment of the parents, combined with the realization that the living-in-sin couple might have to pay for their own wedding arrangements, we assume.  To each their own.  Whatever works.

First born? Only child? Your parent’s decisions effect your future job and salary options

Birth Order Book, The: Why You Are the Way You Are
Birth Order Book, The: Why You Are the Way You Are

“Marsha, Marsha, Marsha!” said Jan, lamenting the fact – again – that she’s the ignored middle child on The Brady Bunch.

So while it was played for laughs, maybe she did know a little bit about what her future held.  And it’s not pretty.

Just because you telecommute doesn’t mean you’re actually doing any work

Adult Footy Pajamas
Adult Footy Pajamas

Web Watch knows quite a few people who either telecommute or work from home on a regular basis.

We even have a running joke amongst our friends about those “work from home” folks’ real job is that of refilling printer cartridges.  After all, if you work from home, you must not be doing any “real” work compared to those people who have to go to an office or other work location to do their job.

Apparently, you actually have to leave your house for your job to mean anything.  You can’t have surgery done over the phone, can you?
