Video Fun: How to sneak alcohol onto a cruise ship

It’s a game played everywhere around the world:

Tourists find ways to sneak alcohol onto cruise ships, and cruise ships do everything they can to prevent their guests from doing so.

Web Watch has seen cases of beer and liquor be confiscated time and time again when unsuspecting passengers attempt to circumvent the ship’s rules about bringing contraband onboard.

We completely understand, and would never dream of trying to sneak any excess liquor onto our next cruise vacation by replacing the shampoo in a bottle with Kahlua.

That’s just nasty.

How hard is it to learn Spanish?

How hard is it to learn Spanish?

When you look at the scale of all languages around the world, learning Spanish is about as difficult as learning French, Italian, or Portuguese.

Surprisingly, a few other languages were also considered at the same level — Afrikaans, Norwegian, Swedish, and Dutch included.

How to find out how much a taxi ride will cost you

So the other day, Web Watch was out on the road and needed to get from our hotel to a restaurant a few miles away.

We definitely had choices available, as taking a taxi wasn’t our only option — and we didn’t necessarily need to have door-to-door service as being dropped off anywhere in the general neighborhood would have been perfectly acceptable.

But being on a tight budget, we wanted to know ahead of time how much our taxi ride was going to cost us.

The World’s Rudest Country

Web Watch does get out to travel once in a while, and we do our best to try to present ourselves as a courteous tourist on occasion.

Lord knows, cities around the world have opened up their doors to welcome Web Watch and we want to be invited back.  More times than we can count, our kindness to our hosts has been reciprocated back tenfold.

But there are places in this world where the residents look down on tourists with disdain.

Traveling abroad? Don’t forget to pack your doorstop!

If you’re anything like Web Watch, you’ve done a fair amount of traveling over the years.

And with all that traveling, you may have found that you have specific habits or tricks of the trade that you’ve figured out along the way.

For us, it’s that we always have to travel with a fresh crossword puzzle and a pen.  The goal is to finish the crossword puzzle before the end of the flight.

Easy, right?   Sure, we have other oddities in our carry-on luggage:  a pair of dice being one of the more unusual items to have, but it goes along with the deck of cards.

You never know when you’re going to end up needing a deck of cards.

Worst Bed Bug Cities in America

Bed Bugs are making the news all over the place this year, especially with the warm weather that has been seen all across the country this past winter.

So we shouldn’t be surprised that ORKIN, one of the largest pest control companies in the country, is considered an expert on how to control bed bugs.

And now that it’s Spring Break, unsuspecting college kids and high school seniors are going to be traveling all over the country, and may end up bringing home a special friend or two (or three thousand) with them if they’re not careful.

And that’s one reason why Orkin decided to release their list of the TOP 50 BED BUG CITIES in AMERICA for 2011.

How dirty is your hotel room?

A few years ago, Web Watch was visiting Las Vegas with some friends.  As is the case when traveling with a large group of people – especially in Vegas – we all found ourselves staying in different hotels.

And as is the case with different Las Vegas hotels, cleanliness standards can be a bit different from hotel to hotel, company to company.

So while Web Watch was enjoying our crisp, clean sheets, one member of our brigade found herself being transferred from one dirty hotel room to another until she ultimately asked to be checked into a different hotel across the way.

Apparently, maid service doesn’t always check to clear the room of used.. (ahem) … from underneath the bed.

The 2012 Top Earning Nightclubs in the Country

When you go out to the club, are all eyes on you?

Are you with the Party Rock Crew, where all drinks are free?

Well, to run a successful nightclub – you can’t make a habit from giving your drinks away to just anybody.  Handing them out for free to Web Watch?  Sure – that’s to be expected – but not everyone can get away with that like we can.

Still, when you’re making millions upon millions of dollars a year on $500 bottle service, it’s okay to throw out a free drink on occasion.  Grease the celebrity wheels, if you will.

How far can I walk in 2 hours?

Have you ever had a free weekend where you just wanted to head out of town — anywhere — and didn’t have any more solid plan other than “what can we see within a 2-hour drive from here?”

Or asked the same question about how far you could walk or bicycle in a certain timeframe?

Well, worry no more – Web Watch has found a site for you.

The Most Expensive Restaurants in America

A few months back, Web Watch wrote about the TOP 100 RESTAURANTS IN THE WORLD.

Now, while you may not be able to travel all around the world to eat at one of the top 100 restaurants, you could always try treating yourself by eating at one of these MOST EXPENSIVE RESTAURANTS IN AMERICA.

One thing that these restaurants don’t do that makes them so special?  All the things that Web Watch looks for in a quality dining establishment, perfect for date night:

  • They don’t have chairs/tables bolted to the floor
  • They don’t have a drive-thru window
  • They don’t serve free meals for kids with an adult meal purchase

Video Fun: Apparently, you CAN get arrested at Disneyland. Peppersprayed, too

Disneyland and Walt Disney World are often referred to as the “Happiest Places on Earth”.

And for good reason.

But there is an underbelly that seldom sees the light of day.  And it proves that even with the fantasy worlds that Walt built, sometimes people crack a bit under the pressure to always have a good time and escape.

Perhaps there’s a reason that alcohol is hard to find at the Magic Kingdom (unless, of course, you know where to look).

Let’s take a look at how Disney’s professional security teams deal with unruly, and occasionally violent, guests:

What to do in Vegas? In 2011, “not gamble” was on the list

Weird Las Vegas and Nevada: Your Alternative Travel Guide to Sin City and the Silver State
Weird Las Vegas and Nevada:
Your Alternative Travel Guide to Sin City and the Silver State

Web Watch loves visiting Las Vegas.

Then again, we also agree with our friends who say that “a little Las Vegas goes a long way”.  In other words, these people don’t necessarily enjoy the entire gambling, casino, nightlife, gambling aspect of Sin City.

Web Watch knows people that took a vacation out to Nevada and other points west, and their Las Vegas experience consisted solely of driving down the Las Vegas Strip.  They didn’t stop, they didn’t browse.  They had lunch as a nearby McDonald’s (not even at the In-n-Out!) before continuing on their merry way.

We don’t blame them.  There are aspects of Las Vegas that we don’t appreciate either.  But to each their own.

But then the Nevada Gaming Control Board decided to come out with their compilation of revenue numbers and financial analysis of the 2011 gambline business, and the numbers look a bit unusual to us here at Web Watch.

Seven rights you don’t have when you take a cruise

What You Need to Know About Your First Cruise - Cruise Like a Pro Your First Time
What You Need to Know About Your First Cruise – Cruise Like a Pro Your First Time

Have you ever taken a cruise before?

Well, they’re a lot of fun.  And not filled with old people playing shuffleboard.  Of course, it helps if you’re able to take a cruise with a large group of people, so you always have someone fun to hang out with besides your Significant Other.

But let’s keep in mind that a cruise ship is its own entity – especially when it gets out into International Waters, where almost anything can happen when you’re outside of a specific country’s jurisdiction.

So in order to keep order, cruise lines have tiny fine print on the back of their tickets (maybe not literally, but at least figuratively) that you have to sign away on when you agree to board the boat.

The 25 Least Expensive Places to Live

Cost of Living and Doctor's Fees in 1848
Cost of Living and Doctor’s Fees in 1848

Sometimes it’s not so much how you live as where you live that determines how much money you can really save over the course of a year.

And we can thank the COUNCIL FOR COMMUNITY AND ECONOMIC RESEARCH (C2ER) for their annual COST OF LIVING report that lists the LEAST EXPENSIVE CITIES to live in, based on the monthly rent for a 2-bedroom apartment, monthly average house payment, a gallon of gas, a hamburger, and a 1/2-gallon of milk.

How to avoid getting sick when travelling by plane

Airborne
Airborne

It’s the holiday travel season, and tons of Web Watch readers are going to find themselves flying on a crowded plane, more than likely sitting next to somebody who’s just getting over the flu.

It’s like the giant lottery of luck, who you get to sit next to on the plane. Everybody eyes the other people at the terminal, wondering who gets to be lucky enough to sit next to that young attractive man or woman while avoiding eye contact with that overweight, unwashed hairy dude wearing a torn muscle shirt.

Eww.
