Yeah, we thought so.
Texting while driving has increased 50% over 2011. 20% of all drivers say that they’ve done this, despite laws and other regulations in place that make it an offense to do so.
The NHTSA said in a study that MORE DRIVERS ARE TEXTING BEHIND THE WHEEL THAN EVER BEFORE.
- At any time, just under 1% of drivers were texting while driving
- Younger drivers are more likely to do so compared to older drivers. 50% of those aged 21-24 text while driving
The study shows that the most effective way to decrease the amount of texting being done while driving is to increase the amount of enforcement and tickets being issued. In two different studies, researchers saw drops ranging from 33% to 75% in texting when the “no texting while driving” rule was enforced by law enforcement.
While overall automotive deaths have been declining, mainly due to improved vehicle construction, almost 3100 deaths occured in 2010 due to “distractions”.
