America and the Pill: A History of Promise, Peril, and Liberation
World Contraception Day is September 26th.
The purpose of WORLD CONTRACEPTION DAY is, according to their mission statement, “to improve awareness of contraception to enable young people to make informed decisions on sexual and reproductive health”.
In other words, it’s to promote contraception as a way to prevent unplanned pregnancies and sexually-transmitted diseases.
Which is why a survey all about A WOMAN’S CONTRACEPTIVE DECISIONS AFTER THE DECIDE TO STOP HAVING CHILDREN is interesting to talk about today.
- 75% of women surveyed said that they were not planning on having additional children. Of those, 90% were aware of the traditional tubal ligation or vasectomy surgeries, but 12% were unaware of other, less-invasive, options.
- 75% of women surveyed thought vasectomies are easier for men than procedures for women are.
- Men often wait up to 5 years after agreeing to a vasectomy before going “under the knife”. The survey quoted women as saying that they’re more likely to win the lottery over waiting for their man to get snipped.
- 59% of respondents said that “age” was the most common reason to stop having children.
- 55% of respondents said that they felt “satisfaction” after coming to that decision.
As for women who have an opinion about permanent birth control, they listed the following benefits:
- 58% cited being able to be more free with where and when they had sex
- 54% said “no longer having to take The Pill”
