Being corporately responsibile is not necessarily an easy thing to do, let along doing so and being recognized for it.

Harder still, is coming out on top of such a list of recognition.

Yet, that’s exactly what JOHNSON & JOHNSON  and THE WALT DISNEY COMPANY have done this year in this year’s CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY INDEX

The CSR Index is maintained by the Boston College Center for Corporation Citizenship and the Reputation Institute.  It measures whether the public feels that companies are perceived as being socially or environmentally responsible, ethical, are run fairly and transparently, and pay and treat their employees fairly.

The points evaluated were:

  • Citizenship: Does the company contribute positively to its surrounding community in a socially and environmentally responsible fashion?
  • Governance: Is the company business run in a fair and transparent fashion? Do stakeholders associate the company with high ethical business standards?
  • Workplace: Are employees treated fairly and paid a decent wage?  Does the company invest in developing employee skill sets and career opportunities?

The Index is based on a survey of over 7,700 people who were asked to rate up to five companies on those values.

Johnson & Johnson moved up from number 5 on last year’s CSR list to number 1 on this year’s list with a CSR score of 82.67.  The top 25 companies all received scores of 75 points or more.
