Earlier this month, the WORLD VIDEO GAME HALL OF FAME announced its winning candidates for their 2020 induction ceremony.
- The game that is recognized as starting the “Match Three” gaming aesthetic that Candy Crush was able to “be inspired by” to make a ton of money: BEJEWELED
- 1981’s CENTIPEDE, from Atari.
- Sierra On-Line’s KING’S QUEST. The entire King’s Quest series is often credited as the first “graphical adventure game”
- MINECRAFT. It’s been around since 2009? What?
These video games join other honorees in the Video Game Hall of Fame, which started awarding status back in 2015 (Pac-Man, Pong, Tetris…).
Some of the games that didn’t make the cut this year include Frogger, Guitar Hero, GoldenEye 007, NBA Jam, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego, and…. the SNAKE GAME from Nokia Phones. Maybe next year.
If there’s a game that you’d like to see inducted into next year’s Hall of Fame, the Hall will be accepting nominations through February.
