Why Popcorn Costs so Much at the Movies
If you love going to the movies as much as Web Watch does, you’d be seeing at least two movies a week, every week for a year.
Granted not every film you see is going to be good. And not all will be in genres that you always enjoy.
But you’ll definitely see all the great films, all the funny films, and all the films that people will be talking about the next day if you take the time to go to the theater regularly.
But not everyone can afford to spend $12 per movie ticket these days. Seeing 2 films a week for 52 weeks can add up to over $1200/year… and that’s not counting parking, popcorn, sodas, snacks you sneak into the theater, beer (purchased at the fancy theaters that have a liquor license)… and you can count on doubling that if you go with a date.
$2400 a year, just to sit in the cool air-conditioned comfort of a big screen theatrical event with someone special a few times a week, every week of the year.
Sounds a little expensive, doesn’t it? Especially when you compare it to the paltry cost of unlimited streaming films from Netflix or Amazon for about $100/year (give or take).
But watching films at home — especially if you have to wait to see those big blockbuster spectaculars that you love seeing on the Big Screen — never really lives up to the hype. We all know people who have dumped their Netflix accounts like a hot potato with the recent price hike.
So what’s a movie lover to do?
Check out MOVIE PASS, that’s what.
What’s MOVIE PASS?
Imagine paying just one low monthly fee to be able to see as many movies as you’re like to see in a month (with a limit of one free movie per day, per account).
What?
Yes — it’s like Netflix, but for the movie theater industry!
Sooooo, what’s the catch?
Let’s do the math:
- You can buy a one-month, three-month, or 12-month subscription
- Each plan has a different fee, with the longer subscriptions costing less per month.
- Prices range from $29.99/month ($359.99/year) to $49/month (one month at a time)
So if you need two tickets per month, you can spend $60-$100 (depending on length of the plan ordered). And with that, you can see up to 30 movies — one movie a day for the entire month. Yeah, we’re not counting February. Go with the program here…
So at $60 for two people, seeing 30 movies a month — assuming you take full advantage of the MOVIE PASS program — those $12 movie tickets you had before are now costing you just $2. And you’re getting almost 3 times as many films, and the same theatrical experience you had before.
Looking at the details, this does sound like a good deal for the ultimate movie lover in your life.
However, the problem we had after we signed up is that the local theaters for us were just a little bit further out of the way than we would have liked. Sure, there were theaters in our area, just not ones that we could “pop on in” a few times a week for. Depending on where you live, you may have better options than we had.
It’s a new startup business, but it’s a great idea that deserves to live on. Maybe more theater chains or locations will sign up for the program. If you love movies, it’s the ultimate gift to give yourself this holiday season.
