Just because you telecommute doesn’t mean you’re actually doing any work

Web Watch knows quite a few people who either telecommute or work from home on a regular basis.

We even have a running joke amongst our friends about those “work from home” folks’ real job is that of refilling printer cartridges.  After all, if you work from home, you must not be doing any “real” work compared to those people who have to go to an office or other work location to do their job.

Apparently, you actually have to leave your house for your job to mean anything.  You can’t have surgery done over the phone, can you?

So it really shouldn’t come as a surprise about a recent survey that covered WHAT DO PEOPLE ACTUALLY DO WHEN THEY TELECOMMUTE?  What it says merely confirms everything that we’ve thought all along, and then some — that when people telecommute, they’re really doing almost anything BUT work:

  • 20% of telecommuters work one hour a day… or less
  • 40% say that they work between 4-7 hours.  35% will work 8 or more hours.
  • 1/3 of all respondents said that they don’t even bother to get dressed – they just stay in their pajamas all day.  If it matters, this was more likely for women to do than men
  • 31% said that they did chores around the house instead of working
