Web Watch doesn’t know why scientists bother doing all their fancy research to discover how we can get better sleep.
All they have to do is ask pretty much any adult what one thing they do that seems to work every time:
We all sleep with one foot outside of the covers, don’t we? So what the scientists proved was WHY sticking one foot out of the covers works to help us sleep better versus cuddling up in bed with your feet tucked up under the blanket.
It all has to do with regulating your body temperature (duh!). Sleeping in a cooler room has been proven to lead to better sleep (between 60-67 degrees is a start).
But what about the foot? It helps as a heat release valve, if you will. What’s the first part of your body to get cold in winter? Your feet. What’s the first part of your body to get too hot in summer? Your feet.
Your feet are natural temperature regulators.
By sticking your hot foot out of the blanket, your body has a way to release excess heat out into the room, lowering your overall body temperature to allow you to sleep more soundly.
So keep on doing what you’ve always been doing — but do it now knowing that science agrees with this silly habit of yours.
