How to remove Carrier IQ from your phone

Android figure toy
Google Android Figure

By now, you probably have heard about CARRIER IQ, that software that many cell phone manufacturers and service providers had installed on all sorts of cellphones in order to track how well their networks were performing.

The issue, if you didn’t know, is that CARRIER IQ wasn’t a very well-designed application and was recording a lot of each user’s phone actions without that person’s knowledge.  Now, Congress has gotten involved and it’s turned into a big ugly mess.

The free $500 Red Star WorldWear gift card – is it worth it?

Rock Star Sunglasses
Rock Star Sunglasses

So the other day, Web Watch was flipping through one of our myriad of magazine subscriptions when one of those annoying response card things fell into our lap.

But before we could toss it away as we do all the others, we noticed there was something different about it.  This one had gift card attached to it.

A $500 gift card.

“Whoa,” we said.  What did we do to deserve this, other than subscribe to a magazine or two?

How to take professional pictures of your family without paying for a professional

How To Take Better Pictures Like A Pro
How To Take Better Pictures Like A Pro

Whenever Web Watch goes on a trip – say to Las Vegas, Walt Disney World, San Francisco… wherever – we are completely dumbfounded by all the tourists and families who are trying to get “that perfect shot”.

They group their people together on one side of the walkway, then expect the entire crowd to stay out of the way while you compose the shot.

Have you ever been trying to get from Point A to Point B at any of these touristy spots without having to constantly stop to be courteous to these photo hounds?  We’ve gotten to the point where we say, “Screw it – they’re using a digital camera or their phone, they can take another shot” and we walk right through the photo opp.   We’ve got place to be, folks – so let us move on and get out of your way.

How big of a nerd are you? Try taking the 2011 Geek Test

The Geeks Shall Inherit the Earth: Popularity, Quirk Theory, and Why Outsiders Thrive After High School
The Geeks Shall Inherit the Earth:
Popularity, Quirk Theory, and Why Outsiders Thrive After High School

Web Watch knows that we’re a bit of a computer nerd.  Some would say that “geek” would be the more appropriate term.  To paraphrase a recent episode of CSI, a “freak” is someone who is naturally talented in unusual ways; a “geek” is one who learns how to do the same things.

So we’ll go with “geek”, as all computer knowledge is learned – whether it be via formal school education or by tinkering around with gadgets and on the Internet for hours/days/weeks/years on end to see how things works and to make thinks work better.

Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs were nerds, and they’re proud of it.

Which brings us to our initial question: How big of a geek are you?

Build a iPhone App in Less than an Hour

Have you ever wondered how much money an app developer makes for writing and selling an app via the Apple iTunes app store for the iPhone or iPad?

Maybe not as much money as you think.

Sure, there are tons of stories about the $10,000 a day that a fart app can make for its creators.  But that’s not the norm.

Web Watch Rewind: Why do hotels charge for Internet access? Because minibars are on their way out

Running a Bed & Breakfast For Dummies
Running a Bed & Breakfast For Dummies

Web Watch works hard to make sure our readers are ahead of the curve on various topics.  We like to be among the leaders, not a mere follower.

Which is why, when we see articles on CNN about how INTERNET FEES IRRITATE HOTEL GUESTS, we secretly smile and go about our business in bringing you the good stuff, because we know that we already brought up this very same topic about hotel internet fees almost a year ago.

FuzziBunz® One Size Cloth Diapers
12 Pack Gender Neutral (new) Colors

New parents often have a dilemma to decide, sometimes even before they try to have kids in the first place: are they going to be a “disposable” family or a “cloth” family?

More and more, the trend in eco-friendly parenting is to go with the cloth diapers.  Technology has caught up to the absorbent fabrics being used, and they don’t have the stigma that going natural used to have in the past (“unexpected leakage” being the predominant concern).

New York Apartments
New York Apartments

Today’s challenge? How long would you be able to live in an apartment that was just 11′ long and 7′ wide?

That’s about 78 square feet total.

Do you think you could survive living there overnight?  A week?  How about a month?

Luke Clark Tyler doesn’t see it as a challenge at all — he’s doing it, and paying $750/month for the privilege of LIVING IN A SHOEBOX-SIZED APARTMENT IN NEW YORK CITY.

Possible takeover target TiVo has awesome customer service (not to mention easy TiVo upgrades)

TiVo Premiere XL
Buy the TiVo PREMIERE XL

TiVo has been taking it on the chin lately.

The recent blog post in the New York Times entitled TiVO, Nice Service if You Can Get It, is the typical drivel written by somebody who hasn’t taken the time to properly research and use the product they’re talking about.

As an example – the writer, Joshua Brustein, says that TiVo has an expensive fee of $19.99/month.  He doesn’t mention that you could purchase a lifetime subscription for $499.  If you’re planning on keeping your TiVo for longer than 24 months, the lifetime subscription is the way to go.  (Web Watch won’t mention the number of deals that are on the TiVo website that may lower the overall cost even further.)

The article goes on, with the writer’s cable company trying to pimp their own DVR over a TiVo — hey, that happens. Same thing with the account of what he went through to get a cable card, involving multiple trips, phone calls, and a service tech who never showed up.    Obviously not an issue with TiVo, but with the cable company the writer is using.  For our TiVo service, Web Watch drove over to our local Cable Shoppe and picked up the cable cards directly.  Installed them into our new TiVo ourselves, and were up and running in just about an hour or so.

Obviously each user’s experience is going to be different, but none of what the writer included in his article is specific to problems with TiVo.

Women of the world – a better pee solution for you!

No Boys Allowed - 2 Girls Using the Men's Room
Buy the poster No Boys Allowed – 2 Girls Using the Men’s Room

It’s a common sight at concerts, festivals, or other public events — long lines at the women’s bathroom.

Yeah, we know – women take longer in the restroom than men do.  Bathroom equality in new buildings, and all that.

Web Watch remembers one Jimmy Buffett concert where the entire backside of the bathroom building had been co-opted by girls who were just looking for a place to pop a squat.  They didn’t care that they were peeing in full view of drunk Buffett fans — they were just happy that they had a place to go.

Seeing a lineup of 30 girls all peeing against the side of a cinderblock wall is quite a site.  Power in numbers, indeed.

If you’ve read Playboy magazine over the years (and by “read”, we mean “flipped through the pages to the pictorials, occasionally check out the interview, read the Playboy Funnies, and check out a cartoon or two”), then you should be familiar with Chip Rowe and the rest of the Playboy Advisor staff of intelligent and well-read question-and-answer writers.

Sure, Web Watch could point you to any number of articles about how to secure your wireless router, but why should we do that when Playboy has summed up the steps to take in such an easy-to-understand manner and pleasant packaging?
