Movie Review: X-Men Origins – Wolverine

Rated PG-13 for action movie violence, some language, a bit of blood, and one or two scenes of Hugh Jackman running around butt-ass naked.

Rating: B-

As a movie fan, I have really enjoyed the way the X-Men franchise has been run so far.  There’s enough story background in each film to give the casual movie-goer enough information about who’s who and what’s what, and there’s also lots of little things that would appeal to a diehard X-Men fan who knows these characters inside and out.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine is no exception to that philosophy.  There is no need to know any of the previous X-Men films to enjoy this one.  Does it help to have some background?  Sure, but it’s not required here.   Besides, guessing as to who the good guys and the bad guys are is part of the fun.  But if you are already an X-Men fan, you won’t leave this film disappointed.  Whichever type of fan you are, it is a fun popcorn action film, perfect for the beginning of the summer movie season.

My theater was packed with comic fans, and they seemed to enjoy the film immensely, cheering whenever a new Mutant would make their initial appearance on the screen.  It was hard not to get caught up in the audience’s enthusiasm during the film.

There were a few good laughs scattered throughout, and the action scenes, while fewer in number than I would have liked, were well done.  The scenes that existed to provide character motivation (for this film, as well as insight into Wolverine for the previous X-Men films) didn’t drag the film to a crawl.

Marvel already knows where they want the X-Men Origins series to roll to.  Based on the characters shown in this movie, I would love to see a film centered around Gambit.

Oh, and this film qualifies for a CLOSING CREDITS ALERT: be sure to stick around through the very end of the closing credits.  While it is not unusual for Marvel to have special post-credit scenes in their films (Iron Man, anyone?), there have already been reports that different prints of the film contain different closing scenes.  While I felt the scene I saw was relatively benign, others in the theatre let out a happy “whoop”.  I’ll assume that they know more about where the Wolverine story goes next than the average person does.

Movie Review: Observe and Report

Rated R for language, full frontal male nudity, a boob shot, a little violence, alcohol, drug use, a couple of sex scenes, and even more full frontal male nudity.

Rating:  B

Observe and Report is about your typical gung-ho mall cop (Seth Rogan) who sees himself taking his job a bit more serious than most in his career path of choice.  He’s good at what he does, but wants more.   The audience roots for Rogan throughout, cheering his successes as much as feeling his pain as he works towards his goals.

In the end, I left the film happy, and pleased with the film’s resolution (compared to other films that leave you wanting more or wondering what the characters’ next steps are going to be).

Movie Review: Adventureland

Rated R for language, drug use, puking, and dry humping in the back seat of what appears to be an AMC Gremlin.

Rating: C

The movie poster proudly proclaims that Adventureland is from the same director who brought you Superbad.

Superbad was funny.  Adventureland isn’t.

What was promised, based on the trailers and advance press, was a film filled with wacky amusement park hijinks in the newly vogue retro teen-sex-comedy genre.

Movie Review: Watchmen

Rated R for violence, blood and gore (albeit slightly cartoony), adult situations, sex, nudity, language.  And a few shots of giant blue penii.

Rating: C

First, a disclaimer:  I haven’t read the famed Watchmen comic.  The little I knew of the storyline going in was what I had read or seen in pre-movie promotional material.  I had enough of the backstory to understand what the film was going to be about, and had a general inkling of the film style that was going to be presented.  In other words, I did not go into the film a fan by any stretch of the imagination.  But I was interested.

Movie Review: He’s Just Not That Into You

Rating: B+
Rated PG-13 for language, adult situations, sex talk, and Scarlett Johansson in her underwear

I was surprised how much I liked this film, as I went in with trepidation about whether it was going to be some cheesy chick flick or bad book adaptation. But to my surprise, there were some genuine laughs to be had. Not belly-busters like you might get with an over-the-top comedy like Borat, but good times had by all.   The film clocks in at a solid 2 hours of entertainment.

It’s a great date movie (for first daters or long-time relationship folks), and shouldn’t lead to any dangerous post-movie discussions about where your particular relationship may be headed.  It’s a great film for the women to hit on Ladies Night Out, but it’s not one for the guys to see on their own.

One thing I found amusing was Kevin Connolly’s part, which is almost a complete 180 from the character “E” he plays on Entourage.  If  you’ve watched the HBO show, you’ll know what I mean.

Movie Review: I Am Legend

Rating: B-

It’s entertaining, especially if you like those isolationist sci-fi stories.

It’s a little creepy, with some suspenseful scares — if you hate things jumping out at you then you probably won’t like that aspect of the film.

The shots of empty New York City are amazing.

I’ve been told that the ending is not the same as the book, so looking at the film that way, I’ll have to equate it to the same way that the movie Logan’s Run is different from the book.  They’re both worthwhile and can stand on their own, but don’t try to compare them directly to each other if you don’t want to be disappointed.

Movie Review: The Bucket List

Rated PG-13 for language and old person butt.

Rating: (see below)

This one is hard to tell which way it will go with audiences.

It predictably hits every single “things you should do before you die” movie cliche there is. The question is whether the audience will consist of old people who
want a good movie that they can relate to (ie no wizards or talking cars, and poop jokes that actually are related to the story as opposed to for
juvenile comedic effect), or if they would avoid a movie that is so up
front in talking about impending death for fear of being reminded of their
own upcoming events.

Movie Review: Superbad

Rated R for toplessness, foul language, sex, drugs, rock-n-roll, and more foul language.

Rating:  A-

Almost as funny as Knocked Up, if Knocked Up were a Harold & Kumar spinoff.

Lots of good, solid laughs, but all the jokes and language is pretty foul, raunchy, and completely not PC in any way.
