How many vegans are there?

You know the old joke – how can you tell if somebody is vegan? Don’t worry, they’ll tell you.

According to a recent Gallup poll, only 5% of Americans are vegetarians, and just 3% of Americans say they’re vegan.

These percentages really haven’t changed that much since Gallup started conducting their Veganism and Vegetarianism survey in 1999.

Interesting that those who earn less than $30,000 a year are more likely to be vegetarians than those in higher tax brackets.

If you’re a vegetarian, you won’t be one for much longer after reading this

We know a few vegetarians, and a handful of vegans too.

The vegetarians? We can deal with them. The vegans are a bit more difficult when inviting over for dinner, if you’re intermingling with non-vegans at the same meal.  Sure, it can be done – you just have to be careful.

Then there are those vegan friends who are no longer vegan. While they were so adamant about sharing the vegan lifestyle with others, they weren’t quite as vocal about when they switched back to being a carnivore.  Wish we had known that before we invited them back over for a meal.

Who eats more meat, China or the US? (You’ll be surprised by the answer)

People in China are stereotypically believed to live longer, healthier lives – primarily based on their dietary habits. And as stereotypes go, that’s really not a bad judgement call to make on anyone’s part. Who wouldn’t want to be naturally considered healthier than those around you, solely based on your heritage or where you currently live?

Well, perhaps there’s something more at steak (HA!) than what we think is happening, diet-wise.

The best Kale and Brussels Sprouts Salad Recipe

If there are two vegetables that tend to turn off carnivores at the very mention of them, two top qualifiers would be “kale” and “Brussels sprouts” (or “brussel sprouts”, if you’re into spelling it wrong).

Kale is typically used as a garnish rather than something you’d willingly go out of your way to make a salad from.  (And for those of you who’ve decided that pushing kale through your Mr Juicer because kale juice is said to help grow hair, it’s kinda gross from what we’ve seen our friends go through.)

And everybody knows that Brussels sprouts taste best when sauteed in tons and tons of bacon fat.

Want kids to eat more fruits and vegetables? It’s all about cartoon marketing

Look, we all know that kids today are a little on the plump side.

They don’t like to exercise, they don’t like to eat anything but fast food.

Blame it on MTV, video games, and Ronald McDonald.

But there’s a reason for it – and it may have something to do with the same reason that Sugar Smacks had to be changed to just Smacks on the cereal aisle.

Eat like a man – don’t be a vegetarian

If you’re like the majority of people today, you’re a meat-eater.

A carnivore.  You’ll eat chicken, steak, pork.

You know, all that good, tasty stuff.

A few of you may go fish-only, deciding that being a pescatarian is more your style.

Even fewer may decide that, for various reasons, being a vegetarian is the right lifestyle choice for you.  And then there are the vegans, who eschew all animal products (including dairy, eggs, and honey).

We’ll let the vegans be, as they’re not hurting anyone.

But the vegetarians?  Those people we’ll chat about today.  Read on…
