Twitter Memes: #Honk if you #FollowFriday

Some Twitter users can a bit like lemmings, retweeting or otherwise repeating exactly what other Twitter users do whenever something cool is going around.  Everybody wants to be different, but they still want to exist as part of the in-crowd and participate in a group activity.

Some memes, like #Honk, exist just to be silly and fun.

Sometimes, a meme is grown out of necessity before it takes on a life of its own.

#FollowFriday was the brainchild of Micah Brown.  The concept was simple:  all Micah wanted was the names of other cool or interesting people to follow on Twitter (since finding those people on your own can be a daunting experience as Twitter doesn’t have a “I’m a cool person” checkbox on the user profile pages that others could search on).

Calculating Amusement Park Wait Times via Twitter

As Web Watch asked in our DISNEYLAND PARK PLANNER iPHONE APPLICATION article a few weeks ago:

“One would only hope that they’ll follow this up with appropriate apps for Walt Disney World, Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySEA, Universal Studios Hollywood, New York City subway trains, or any other amusement park, event, travel, or entertainment facility that would benefit from the social technology that the iPhones and similar devices make available.”

And now the floodgates have opened as more apps just like what we described have begun to arrive:

Tweet Race 2009: @aplusk vs @cnnbrk (wins @EA loot)

By now you’ve heard of the TWITTER RACE between Ashton Kutcher and CNN to be the first Twitter user to have 1 million followers.

The TWITTER RACE website, updated every 10 minutes, has CNN in the lead right now by about 21k followers (give or take a few as I type this).

Electronic Arts, the video game publisher behind the Madden franchise and other hit games, just tweeted that they were going to award Ashton Kutcher’s 1,000,000th follower a copy of every game EA makes in 2009 for the winner’s system, and will also be featured in The Sims 3 video game.  They estimate that this whole thing will be over in the next 15-20 hours or so, at the current rate those two users are attracting followers.

Disneyland iPhone Application

Disney iPhone Application
Disney iPhone Application

I know what one of the first applications any new iPhone-owning Disney fan is going to want to go out and buy from the iPhone Apps Store:  the DISNEYLAND PARK PLANNER from HyTech Professionals.

Sure, the park planner has the basics down that any decent park planner would have:  scrollable/zoomable map, restaurant menus, park and show hours, attraction descriptions, FastPass locations, etc.

But where the “DPP” shines is with special features that utilize two built-in features that the iPhone has:  geotargeting, and interactivity with the Internet.

The geotargeting app is handy, as the DPP can pinpoint your location within the park and then direct you to the nearest restroom, restaurant, attraction, or food stand that you are looking for – the ultimate Disney tour guide in your pocket.

But even better is when you use the DPP to tell you what rides have the shortest wait times.  Sure, Disney has come up with a way to do this with their Official Cell Phone Sponsor, Verizon – available for all Verizon subscribers in the parks – but the DPP opens up this information to everyone who is using the DPP.

To better describe how this works, let me explain how Disney calculates their ride wait times:

Celebrities’ Narcisstic Twitter Obsession

The British Gossip website HOLY MOLY has come up with their own CALCULATION TO DETERMINE A RATING FOR HOW NARCISSTIC A CELEBRITY IS BY USING TWITTER

When looking at a celebrity’s Twitter account, the celebrity is labeled as a “narcissitic tool” if they have more followers than they are following others.

The equation is

100-((100/# of followers) * # of following)

Using this equation, here are the top 20, along with their Twitter Narcissism rating.  For those interested, Holy Moly has included a handy spreadsheet for you to see their full list, as well as add your own friends and family.
