It’s BACON – and it’s KOSHER for Passover!

Everybody is familiar with what “kosher” food is, right?  You see the little “circle K” or “circle U” on food labels as the indicator of that product meeting certain religious preparation standards.

For example, for the longest time Oreo cookies were never kosher – sweet tooths had to be satisfied by eating Hydrox cookies instead.

Passover, on the other hand, has a more special label and marketing behind it at the supermarket.  That’s where you may see a more elaborate display indicating foods that are “Certified Kosher for Passover” rather than being merely “kosher”.

Kosher for Passover requires the food to be made without ingredients that shouldn’t be eaten during the Passover holiday – this food, like Wonder Bread and cakes and most beers – all contain yeast.  And yeast is apparently evil of evils and must be disposed of before the Passover seder can begin.  All those foods that can’t be eaten during Passover are classified as “chometz”.

But guess what?  Bacon – and we’re talking full-on pork bacon, not that whimpy turkey bacon – can be classified and eaten as “Kosher for Passover”.

Who doesn’t like the smell if bacon?

Okay, besides most vegetarians and perhaps some religious folks — who doesn’t like the smell of bacon?

Well, Web Watch is still unsure about this new perfume, interestingly enough, entitled “Bacon” (pronounced bay-cone) – and it very well may be a prank product right now.  But perfume maker FARGGINAY has gone ahead and created just that.  A bacon-scented perfume.

The History of the Green Bean Casserole

Green Bean Casserole
Green Bean Casserole

Every year at Thanksgiving, families across the country descend upon their local grocery store and clear the shelves of French’s Fried Onions, Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom Soup, and cans of green beans – all in the name of recreating that traditional holiday side dish of GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE.

But did you know that this fabulous holiday treat isn’t necessarily as traditional as you might think?  It was created by the Campbell’s Soup Company as a way to sell more soup.

Award-Winning recipe for Cinco de Mayo Guacamole with Blue Cheese and Bacon (inspired by Food Network Best Thing I Ever Ate)

Friends of Web Watch have a large-scale annual Cinco de Mayo party featuring a salsa competition. We’ve been lucky enough to have walked away a prize every year with various takes on salsa, so when this year’s invitation indicated that there would be a guacamole competition instead (“to shake things up a bit”), we took that on as a challenge.

Because, let’s face it, guacamole really isn’t all that hard to make. It’s making prize-winning guacamole that people will declare as “the best thing I ever ate” that takes a little bit more effort.
