Steakhouse or Gay Bar?

You’ve driven down the road and seen the signs for a new restaurant or bar in your town.  Sometimes, have you ever wondered – based solely on the name itself – what type of restaurant it was?

Sure, we’re all familiar with Hooters, and for the most part the name conjures up what one would expect to see inside.

Similarly for Longhorn Steakhouse or Tony Roma’s Ribs – you know what those establishments are going to be about before you even step foot in the door.

Comparing grocery store prepared foods to homemade: which is better?

Web Watch is a fan of supporting our local grocery stores and their prepared food sections.

Whether it be picking up a hot rotesserie chicken from Sam’s Club, Costco, or the local grocery store; a rack of ribs, freshly smoked; a dinner plate made to order right at the meat counter; or even the fish department steaming your purchase while you shop — grocery stores have discovered that providing ready-to-eat food is a great way to supplement their bottom line.

Why? Because Web Watch likes to eat, but doesn’t always have time to cook.

Sure, we know it’s more expensive to buy a chicken that’s already seasoned and heated for us over going through that process ourselves, but for now we’re okay with that.

To paraphrase Cookie Monster, “prepared, ready-to-eat foods are a sometimes meal”.

What sandwich best defines your state?

Everybody loves a good sandwich.

Just take two pieces of bread and slap some meat and a few condiments inside, and hoo-boy, you just know that’s good eatin’.

And as you travel around the country like Web Watch has, you’ll know that everywhere has a regional specialty that just defines it perfectly.

We recall one trip we took to Dallas where we found ourselves at a small cafeteria looking for lunch.  On the menu, it said “steak sandwich”, which we thought sounded delightful.

To our chagrin, we received the local favorite “chicken-fried steak” sandwich, which is definitely not what we were expecting or had in mind.

Eat like a man – don’t be a vegetarian

If you’re like the majority of people today, you’re a meat-eater.

A carnivore.  You’ll eat chicken, steak, pork.

You know, all that good, tasty stuff.

A few of you may go fish-only, deciding that being a pescatarian is more your style.

Even fewer may decide that, for various reasons, being a vegetarian is the right lifestyle choice for you.  And then there are the vegans, who eschew all animal products (including dairy, eggs, and honey).

We’ll let the vegans be, as they’re not hurting anyone.

But the vegetarians?  Those people we’ll chat about today.  Read on…

20 condiments that make every food taste better

Web Watch knows a girl who only eats chicken fingers, cheese, french fries, and ketchup.

Yeah, we know – it’s a little weird.  But she’s happy with it.

Asked her once what she would do if the world ever ran out of ketchup… and she wasn’t happy.  For her, ketchup makes the world go ’round.

Similarly, we have many friends who wouldn’t dream of eating watermelon without a little salt on it.  It’s their thing.

Dogs understand people more than you think

How well do you know your dog?

More importantly, how well does your dog know you?

Have you ever noticed that your dog does really well with sensory clues around them to react to?  Web Watch remembers a former pet we had that would sleep in the corner all night long… but the one time that we knowingly get up to go to the refrigerator for a snack, they would wake right up and follow us to the kitchen.

Every.  Single.  Time.

It’s like they knew something, sensed something about what we were doing – and acted upon it.

Turns out, our observation isn’t that far from the truth discovered by scientists.

There are 4 different cinnamons, 3 of them are fake, and tasters can’t tell the difference

A few years ago, Web Watch wrote about how ARTIFICIAL VANILLA CONTAINS COAL TAR.

It ends up that there are many different artificial food products that contain ingredients that we may or may not know about.

Take, for example, the simple cinnamon stick.

Did you know that there really are three different products that are commonly sold as “cinnamon sticks”?

Did you know that only one of them is actually really considered “cinnamon”?

Only 15% of Americans avoid food poisoning by doing just one thing

Having food poisoning is not pretty, either for you or those around you.

Web Watch knows – the one time it hit us, we were trying to enjoy a group outing while on a trip away from home.  You’d be surprised how quickly getting that ill, that quickly will identify who your real traveling companions are (hint: that number is close to zero during that time period — when it comes to food poisoning, you’re going to be mainly on your own).

So what can you do to avoid getting food poisoning?

Unfortunately, the majority of food poisoning occurs while you’re away from home, eating at restaurants with poor health scores or who happened to receive tainted food themselves.

In other words, when you’re eating out, there’s not much you can do if someone serves you bad food that really, really disagrees with you.
