10 Things You Don’t Know About… Seattle

Seattle is a great place to visit.

It’s a nice town.  A bit damp, but very nice.  Good people, good food, comfortable weather, if you don’t mind the mist.  Well worth the trip if you haven’t had a chance to go.  (Here’s a hint:  take the city bus from the airport to downtown.  It’s reasonably priced and will get you where you want to go.  All the locals do it.)

I thought about linking over to 10 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE MOVING TO SEATTLE, but the list started off with…

  1. It rains
  2. No really, it rains a lot here

I’ve watched the Seattle Convention and Visitor’s Bureau promotional video – they claim that Denver has more rain than Seattle does. Comparing what the video tells me just didn’t jive with the “Moving to Seattle” list.

So I decided to go with the TOP 10 THINGS SEATTLE GIRLS SHOULD DO TO LOOK HOT.  Here are the highlights:

  1. Wear Makeup
Do Seattle girls just not care, because every time I see one, I throw up a little. However, this one is tricky. Too much makeup or makeup improperly used can make you look like a hooker or a clown.
  2. Wear Cute Dresses and Skirts
blue jeans and a black Northface does not constitute as dressing up.
  3. Work Out That Butt

girls in Seattle tend to have wider loads.
  4. Wear Heels

heels are sexy. They also make your butt look sexier.
  5.  Stop Looking Like Men

Disney’s New Membership Club: D23

Those of you who follow Disney business news are already aware of Disney’s new fan club, D23.

For those of you who don’t follow the business side of the Disney company, D23 is something that the Disney marketers have put together to compete in the value-added, information marketplace that was left with a giant void when the various Disney Club, Magic Kingdom Card, Disney Magazine, and other promotional programs closed down.  They’re calling D23 a “fan community”.

For $75 a year, D23 members get 4 glossy, high-quality magazines a year, along with some extra doodads and opportunities.  Other websites have done a wonderful job dissecting the D23 program announcements, so it is unnecessary to repeat the bulk of the details here.

Legacy Locker – In Case of Emergency

A friend of mine recently visited his parents and they had “the talk” with him.

The Talk consisted of who the accountant was, what the lawyer’s contact info was, where copies of all the Important Documents were, and so on. Just In Case something were to happen.

The parents were thorough – every month they sent a CD backup to the safe deposit box with electronic copies of vital accounts, usernames, and passwords that would be needed In Case Of Emergency.

LEGACY LOCKER is a bit like that emergency backup CD, except that all that important information is stored online.  Their marketing material says that “Legacy Locker is a safe, secure repository for your digital property that lets you grant access to online assets for friends and loved ones in the event of death or disability.”

Same Sex Kiss Day at Starbucks

Want to kiss somebody in public on April 15th?

Why not try your local Starbucks?  And while you’re at it, make sure the person you’re kissing is the same sex as you are.  Apparently, it’s an all-day affair.

Since they’re doing a fine job promoting the SAME SEX KISS DAY themselves, I’m just going to share their press information and details after the break.

Book Review: Family Words, the Secret Language of Families

Remember Rich Hall?

He was the comedian known for the “Sniglets” he presented on Saturday Night Live.  A Sniglet is a made-up word that he used to describe something that didn’t already exist in the dictionary… but should.

An example:  “bugpedal” – the act of speeding up or slowing down your car in order to use the resulting passing wind to remove a dead bug from the windshield.

But Sniglets are made-up words. A comedy act.  Nobody expects to use those terms in the real world.

Except in the real world, people do make up words in their families for everyday use.  The remote control is a “clicker”, “remote”, “controller”, “switcher”.  A wheeled trash bin is a “herbie curbie”.  Some of these terms may be obvious to the casual bystander who overhears a family conversation, but other terms may need some explaining.

FAMILY WORDS: A DICTIONARY OF THE SECRET LANGUAGE OF FAMILIES is a compilation of all those terms that may be familiar to one family, but unheard of elsewhere.  Some examples include:

Parodies of Lonely Island’s SNL Digital Shorts

You’ve seen the SNL DIGITAL SHORTS on Saturday Night Live for the past few years.  Many people have said that they’ve been the most consistently funny part of the show since they’ve begun.

All the shorts are the brainchildren of The Lonely Island comedy group – Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone.  (Click the album cover image, buy their album — it comes with a DVD with many of their Digital Shorts, some never seen on TV)

They won an Emmy award for the Justin Timberlake collaboration, Dick in a Box.  But other Internet users are taking notice, and making their own versions of the original films.   The first big Digital Short, Lazy Sunday, was the start of the parody run, but as you can see, it certainly wasn’t going to be the last.   Here are 14 different parodies that you may not have seen before:
