Video Fun: Baby Got Back

Sir Mix-a-Lot’s BABY GOT BACK has inspired a few other people to make their own versions of the song, whether it be a remake of the song itself or a different take on the music video.

Take a look at what I’ve found:

Literal Music Videos

This is what a song would sound like if the lyrics were a literal description of what was going on in the music video itself. You can find more of these over at LITERAL MUSIC VIDEOS.

The Future of GM at EPCOT

THE MOTOR REPORT is reporting this morning that General Motors is cutting up to US$800 million from its North American advertising budget this year.

While this will affect GM’s plans for sponsoring the upcoming Transformers sequel,  it is currently unknown whether GM will continue to provide Disney sponsorship dollars for Epcot’s TEST TRACK attraction.  It has been announced that the budget cut applies to GM’s print, TV and film advertising, and its vehicle purchase incentives.

The sponsorship cost has never been announced, but is estimated to be about US$5 million per year, according to sources. This is just a drop in the bucket when compared to cutting $800 million in a single year.

Napoleon Dynamite’s Guide to Social Networking

Seth Simonds has compiled the NAPOLEON DYNAMITE GUIDE TO SOCIAL NETWORKING, because let’s face it — anyone who is a new user to Facebook, MySpace, bulletin board discussion groups, business networking events, speed dating, or any other forced social intermingling activity really needs a hand to break through the pre-established cliques and get away from being that awkward wallflower to become a true contributer to the situation.

And who knows, maybe you’ll meet someone and get a date out of it.

The first three rules are:

  1. Give, like, creative and real compliments.
  2. Don’t let other people take up all your time or space or eat all your steak.
  3. Put your connections to work for others so they get sweet stuff, too.

Take a look at Seth’s article for the other two examples and how Napoleon Dynamite applies to the points he is making.

The whole piece should really be subtitled, “EVERYTHING I KNOW ABOUT HOW TO SUCCEED IN SOCIAL NETWORKING I LEARNED FROM NAPOLEAN DYNAMITE”.

Don’t know if Seth will take my suggestion though.  Maybe if I offer to draw him a liger, he’ll consider it.

Wikipedia Band Name / Album Generator

The latest meme to spread across the Internet is USING WIKIPEDIA TO NAME YOUR BAND’S FIRST ALBUM

It’s a three-part process as you discover the name of your band, the name of the album, and the album cover art.

  1. Click on Wikipedia’s “Display Random Page” link.  The page title that is displayed is the name of your band
  2. Go to Random Quotations and view a set of random quotes.  The last four or five words of the very last quote on the page is the name of your album.
  3. Visit Flickr’s list of uploads from the last 7 days. The third picture displayed is the picture to use on your album cover.

Here is an example:

Full House Screws Up Walt Disney World

One thing that I get annoyed with is when TV shows take liberties with established facts about existing places.  For example, MTV’s Road Rules screwed up in their first season by showing the Winnebago driving north on a highway. The problem was that each subsequent highway shot was from a section of road that was further south than the previous one.  All the editors had to do was place those highway shots in their correct order.  They were going to show those shots anyway, so at least be smart about it.  It was like insisting that the first five letters of the alphabet are “A-B-E-D-C”.

Text Messaging is Good For Your Brain

New Scientist magazine reported this week that TEXT MESSAGING IS GOOD FOR YOUR KIDS.

It all has to do with how our brains work, in that using text abbreviations helps brains think about what the abbreviations really mean, thus providing a smart workout.  The initial thought was that using abbreviations and bad spelling, as frequently seen in SMS messaging, would hinder both reading and spelling abilities. A study of British pre-teen children showed that text-happy kids were better readers than those that were not frequent texters.

A follow-up study showed that it wasn’t just reading that improved, but that literacy also increased.

The results of this study are similar to what we’ve seen about speed reading,  in that a paragraph doesn’t need to be grammatically accurate – or that the words even be spelled correctly, in order to be understood.  Here’s an example from that study, that you should be able to read just fine:

In a puiltacibon of New Scnieitst you could ramdinose all the letetrs, keipeng the first two and last two the same, and reibadailty would hadrly be aftcfeed. My ansaylis did not come to much beucase the thoery at the time was for shape and senqeuce retigcionon. Saberi’s work sugsegts we may have some pofrweul palrlael prsooscers at work. The resaon for this is suerly that idnetiyfing coentnt by paarllel prseocsing speeds up regnicoiton. We only need the first and last two letetrs to spot chganes in meniang.
