10 Things You Don’t Know About… Golf on TV

Jack Graham at Golf Digest wrote a list of 10 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT GOLF ON TV back in 2004. I’m sure most of these are still valid.  Here are a few of the items that were raised – go read the article for the others.

  • Only half the shots you see are actually live.
The commentators won’t tell you which shots are live and which are taped, and taped shots that are called by on-course announcers have the play-by-play done live on-air while the tape is played, by memory.
  • We know the hole truth.
Some hole locations will work better for TV while others are more difficult to work with.  The TV producers will try to suggest to the tour officials which positions would be better suited for a televised schedule, and hopefully the course decisions will take those suggestions into account when planing hole locations.
  • We fiddle with the leader board.
Big names playing in the tournament go to the top of the chart, for more visibility.
  • You’ll learn much more if you watch on a weekday.
During the week, announcers have more time to talk as the tournament’s storylines haven’t been developed yet.
  • Want to get on TV?  It’s easy.
All TV producers want is an eye-catching gallery.  Cute babies always work, as does hovering around the player’s wives or girlfriends.
  • We miss plenty of shots, but none of Tiger’s.
Because everyone wants to watch Tiger.

Video Fun: Wedding Reception Dances

We’ve all been to interesting weddings.

Some I’ve attended were memorable due to the groomsmen (they were all in a band together), the catering decorations (the official photographer was taking pictures of all the wedding guests licking the ice sculpture over the course of the evening), or the bride sharing with everyone about the types of tranquilizers she was on that day.  I even have a tale to tell about what songs NOT to play at a wedding reception, but that’s a different story for a different day.

For now, take a gander at what these wedding receptions were like.  They all seem like fun, don’t they?

I think what we can take away from this is that what you think is an original idea may already have been done. So if you’re thinking of doing a fun dance at the reception, try to be a bit original.

Where Does Belly Button Lint Come From?

Patrick Sawer in the Telegraph UK is reporting that an AUSTRIAN SCIENTIST HAS DISCOVERED WHERE BELLY BUTTON LINT COMES FROM

It took three years and 503 pieces of his own belly button lint, but Georg Steinhauser has determined that it’s the body hair surrounding the belly button that traps fat, sweat, dust, dead skin and clothing lint and gathers it in the navel.

He concluded that there were a few ways to eliminate navel lint from accumulating:

  • shave the belly hairs surrounding the navel
  • wear old clothes, as they have less lint
  • belly piercings, such as belly button rings, keep lint away from the navel

Video Fun: Baby Got Back

Sir Mix-a-Lot’s BABY GOT BACK has inspired a few other people to make their own versions of the song, whether it be a remake of the song itself or a different take on the music video.

Take a look at what I’ve found:

Literal Music Videos

This is what a song would sound like if the lyrics were a literal description of what was going on in the music video itself. You can find more of these over at LITERAL MUSIC VIDEOS.

The Future of GM at EPCOT

THE MOTOR REPORT is reporting this morning that General Motors is cutting up to US$800 million from its North American advertising budget this year.

While this will affect GM’s plans for sponsoring the upcoming Transformers sequel,  it is currently unknown whether GM will continue to provide Disney sponsorship dollars for Epcot’s TEST TRACK attraction.  It has been announced that the budget cut applies to GM’s print, TV and film advertising, and its vehicle purchase incentives.

The sponsorship cost has never been announced, but is estimated to be about US$5 million per year, according to sources. This is just a drop in the bucket when compared to cutting $800 million in a single year.

Napoleon Dynamite’s Guide to Social Networking

Seth Simonds has compiled the NAPOLEON DYNAMITE GUIDE TO SOCIAL NETWORKING, because let’s face it — anyone who is a new user to Facebook, MySpace, bulletin board discussion groups, business networking events, speed dating, or any other forced social intermingling activity really needs a hand to break through the pre-established cliques and get away from being that awkward wallflower to become a true contributer to the situation.

And who knows, maybe you’ll meet someone and get a date out of it.

The first three rules are:

  1. Give, like, creative and real compliments.
  2. Don’t let other people take up all your time or space or eat all your steak.
  3. Put your connections to work for others so they get sweet stuff, too.

Take a look at Seth’s article for the other two examples and how Napoleon Dynamite applies to the points he is making.

The whole piece should really be subtitled, “EVERYTHING I KNOW ABOUT HOW TO SUCCEED IN SOCIAL NETWORKING I LEARNED FROM NAPOLEAN DYNAMITE”.

Don’t know if Seth will take my suggestion though.  Maybe if I offer to draw him a liger, he’ll consider it.
