Pop Quiz: Can you name the #1 selling paper clip brand?

paper clip cufflinksCan you name the #1 selling brand of paper clips?

It’s a simple question.  It should be obvious.

For every product in the world, there is a single top selling brand.  Some items are easy to name as the top selling brand in their categories:  Budweiser (or Bud Light if you need to be a stickler).  Coca-Cola (ditto for Diet Coke, again depending on your point of view).  Bic pens are ubiqitious, but at least you know who Bic is and that they are a pen manufacturer.

But the paper clip is even more common.

And chances are you still haven’t thought of even one manufacturer of paper clips, let alone a brand name, by the time you’ve read this far.

You’re kidding – How can the top gadget of this decade NOT be TiVo?

Best Gadget HackingSo PASTE Magazine has come out with their list of the TOP 20 GADGETS OF THE PAST DECADE (2000-2009), and while Web Watch certainly agrees with the sentiment that such a list entails, we seriously question the validity of any such survey that places TiVo anywhere lower than #1.

How to Calculate Music Royalties with this Album Sales Calculator

Beatles for SaleA few years ago, Web Watch posted a piece on using a MUSIC ROYALTY CALCULATOR TO DETERMINE ALBUM PROFITS, and we thought that it was a good time to revisit that topic.

Why?

Because many things have changed in the music industry since we we wrote that original piece.  That music royalty calculator link is still valid, but we found another one that you might want to look at as well.

How fast is the Internet? It’s fast… but not “Cheetah-fast”

Cheetah USB driveThe Internet today is certainly faster than the Internet of 20 years ago.

Web Watch remembers using a 2400 baud modem to connect to what was the ‘net back in the day – and that was considered lightning fast for the time.  (Sadly, Web Watch still has that modem in the back closet, just in case our broadband connection dies and we have to resort to connecting to the net the old-fashioned way.)

We eventually got 19,200 baud, and later 56k modems – everyone thought that was as fast as the Internet could possibly go at the time.  We were transferring files in hours instead of days, and that was good enough for us.

But with broadband and wireless everywhere, transferring large amounts of data has become an everyday activity – but some transfers can still take a while to process.

With that in mind, some enterprising scientists decided to see exactly how long it would take to transfer a large file across the Internet, and compare that to the landspeed of some animals to see which was faster.

The Ideal Toolbox: WD-40 for things that should move, and duct tape for things that shouldn’t

Duct Tape and WD-40It has been said that the ideal toolbox will only contain two things:  WD-40 for things that should move, and a roll of duct tape for things that shouldn’t.

Web Watch would throw into that toolbox a hammer, a bundle of zipties, and a Leatherman.

All of these are the perfect tools to use to fix any situation, and

How To Troubleshoot Sprint’s Android Samsung Moment Phone’s USB Connection

USB developers guideA friend of Web Watch purchased the new Sprint Android phone, the Samsung Moment, when it was released the other day, and they were having a difficult time getting the phone to connect to their Windows-based computer via the supplied USB connector.

After spending countless hours on the phone with Sprint customer service and technical support (including an unusual interchange with not one – but two – Chinese-speaking technical support folks), debugging and reformatting multiple microSD cards, and downloading endless versions of device drivers and software from the Microsoft and Samsung websites, we finally stumbled upon the solution – which Web Watch will share with you, if only to help ease the burder that others may find if they too run across this extremely seemingly undocumented feature.

Products to Help Check Yourself for Breast Cancer

breast cancer self exam aidNational Feel Your Boobies Week continues…

There are a few products on the market that can help you perform a monthly self-exam with more confidence and accuracy than if you didn’t use these products.

One common complaint from women performing a breast self-examination is that they don’t know what they’re feeling for.   The PLEXUS PINK BREAST CHEK KIT is a small sponge pad that feels like breast tissue.   Inside the sponge is a small slit that you can place different size pellets.

With the pellets inside, running your finger on the outside of the breast chek kit should give you an idea of what a lump or similar area would feel like in your own breast.  Sometimes, just knowing what you’re looking for is half the battle in early detection.
