Patrick Murphy loves dogs… but hates dog poop

Boulder, Colorado’s Patrick Murphy is a plant ecologist.

And like many of Boulder’s proud residents, Patrick is extremely environmentally conscious.  Being a plant ecologist and wanting to be environmentally-friendly sort of go hand-in-hand – but throw in the Boulder mystique, and Patrick’s really got something.

A disclaimer:  Web Watch loves Boulder.  We have a number of friends who live there, and we enjoy every opportunity we get to spend some time out there.

But like Austin, Texas’ reputation, Boulder is a bit quirky.

And that’s okay.   We like those folks anyway.  And Patrick does bring up a vitally important point that pet lovers around the world should take notice of:

Dogs understand people more than you think

How well do you know your dog?

More importantly, how well does your dog know you?

Have you ever noticed that your dog does really well with sensory clues around them to react to?  Web Watch remembers a former pet we had that would sleep in the corner all night long… but the one time that we knowingly get up to go to the refrigerator for a snack, they would wake right up and follow us to the kitchen.

Every.  Single.  Time.

It’s like they knew something, sensed something about what we were doing – and acted upon it.

Turns out, our observation isn’t that far from the truth discovered by scientists.

The Dog Poop Initiative
The Dog Poop Initiative

Stop for a moment and take a deep breath.

Ah.  Fresh air smells good, right?

Well, a recent study has come out that shows that the air you breath – especially if you’re living in an urban area – contains more than its fair share of CANINE FECAL MATERIAL in that air.  The study, entitled SOURCES OF BACTERIA IN OUTDOOR AIR ACROSS CITIES IN THE MIDWESTERN UNITED STATES was commissioned to identify what types of bacteria would be found in urban areas.  Would there be differences based on urban population, the season, or other elements?

Adopt a Dog
Adopt a Dog

You know you want one.  Everybody does.

And you know the best way to get a dog is to adopt an unwanted or abandoned puppy from an animal shelter rather than to go to a breeder and pay more money than necessary.  Of course, if purebreds are your thing – then go for it, but if you listen to Bob Barker’s (and now Drew Carey’s) spiel at the end of every episode of THE PRICE IS RIGHT, you know that going to a shelter will give you the warm fuzzies – both literally and figuratively.

Cat Dog Plush

You may think you know, because you are either a cat person or a dog person — but let’s put you to the test:

According to a SURVEY BY APPA, WHICH IS THE MOST POPULAR PET?

First, since we know you’re going to ask — the APPA is the American Pet Products Association, and they’ve been doing an annual National Pet Owners Survey since 1998.  So they kinda know what they’re talking about when it comes to America’s pets.
