How to Sell Music Online: Peoples Music Store

There are a few different ways people can buy music online, but they are all basically the same whether it by the iTunes Music Store, eMusic, Amazon, ro any other retailer.

 PEOPLES MUSIC STORE is a bit different, as it is setup and run by YOU, the music fan.  And unlike that alleged Ponzi scheme BURNLOUNGE from a few years ago, you don’t have to pay any money to participate.

All you have to do is select the music you want to sell, write a few reviews and articles, and post your links for people to buy from you.  You’ll be able to promote your store by including code on your own website, or by using Widgets on places like MySpace or Facebook.  The better you are at providing reviews and commentary, the more visible and profitable your storefront will become.

I’d call the whole thing “MyTunes”, but that name is already taken.

It’s not something that most music-oriented folk have a problem with, but the average person – surprisingly – doesn’t know much about music.  And they often have trouble identifying a song that’s playing on TV or the radio so that they can buy it later.

So instead of calling the station’s request line to ask what that song was, all the listener has to do now is call 866-411-SONG.

Hold the phone to the speaker for 15 seconds, and the system will automatically tell you what song and artist was playing.

The cost is a low $1 per request, or unlimited requests can be had for $4 per month.

Calculating the money made in a record deal can be overly complicated.  Does the artist make a ton of money as soon as they’re signed?  Not necessarily.

All you need to know is:

  • Advances
    • how much the advance is
    • retail price of the record. CD pricing averages to around $11.98 apiece, and indie record deals expect that 80% of your sales to come from CDs.
    • What the royalty paid to you is
    • How big a promotional budget will you have?  This is monty that is coming directly out of your pocket, so spend wisely.
  • Producer’s payout.
    • Royalty
    • Producer paid from record one
  • Label costs
    • Packaging deductions
    • Breakage
    • Percentage of Sales royalties are calculated on

The calculator will determine, based on the info you’ve provided, how much money is made on each actual sale and how many sales you need to have before you start making money.  Of course, this is only going to be a rough estimate – your actual successes may vary.
