Today is Record Store Day 2009

RECORD STORE DAY 2009 takes place today.

It’s the day that celebrates all things vinyl and good about music.

Many artists are releasing albums (or re-releasing, as in Green Day’s case) on Record Store Day in order to increase awareness of how these independent music retailers are still a vital part of the music scene.

Heck, even the COACHELLA MUSIC FESTIVAL will be running their own record store this weekend in honor of Record Store Day.

Some of the other artists releasing albums today include Bruce Springsteen, The Decemberists, The Smiths, Jane’s Addiction, and Bob Dylan.

How important are vinyl records to today’s musician?  When CBS’s 60 Minutes recently interviewed Coldplay’s Chris Martin, the camera caught a glimpse of Coldplay’s “Rules”.  One of the rules was “Promo/review copies to be on VINYL”.  Makes sense, as that makes pirating just a bit more difficult than if the copies were sent digitally.

Tweet Race 2009: @aplusk vs @cnnbrk (wins @EA loot)

By now you’ve heard of the TWITTER RACE between Ashton Kutcher and CNN to be the first Twitter user to have 1 million followers.

The TWITTER RACE website, updated every 10 minutes, has CNN in the lead right now by about 21k followers (give or take a few as I type this).

Electronic Arts, the video game publisher behind the Madden franchise and other hit games, just tweeted that they were going to award Ashton Kutcher’s 1,000,000th follower a copy of every game EA makes in 2009 for the winner’s system, and will also be featured in The Sims 3 video game.  They estimate that this whole thing will be over in the next 15-20 hours or so, at the current rate those two users are attracting followers.

Celebrities’ Narcisstic Twitter Obsession

The British Gossip website HOLY MOLY has come up with their own CALCULATION TO DETERMINE A RATING FOR HOW NARCISSTIC A CELEBRITY IS BY USING TWITTER

When looking at a celebrity’s Twitter account, the celebrity is labeled as a “narcissitic tool” if they have more followers than they are following others.

The equation is

100-((100/# of followers) * # of following)

Using this equation, here are the top 20, along with their Twitter Narcissism rating.  For those interested, Holy Moly has included a handy spreadsheet for you to see their full list, as well as add your own friends and family.

Science says: It’s Good to Marry Your Cousin

Everyone should be marrying their cousin. So says science-oriented magazine Scientific American in an article entitled WHEN INCEST IS BEST: KISSING COUSINS HAVE MORE KIN.

Scientists studied marriage and birth records for 150,000 Icelandic couples – from 1800 through 1965 – to see if there was any connection between the relationship of the couple getting married versus the number of children the couple had.

What the scientists found was that marrying your third cousin offered the best chance of having a baby.

Women born between 1800-1824 who mated with their third cousin had more children (4.04) and grandchildren (9.17) than women who had children with someone who was related no closer than an eight cousin (with 3.34 children and 7.31 grandchildren).  Similar birth differences held up as much as 100 years later, even when families were having fewer children.

The reasoning has to do with genetics, where close relatives can share genes that would reduce the chance of a miscarriage.  The study showed that a person’s third and fourth cousins would share enough common genes to counterbalance any inbreeding disadvantages.

How to Improve Your Scrabble Play

All you need to do is learn some new 2- and 3-letter words.

In what appears to be a bad case of timing from their reporters, The Wall Street Journal finally reported this week of a dramatic change in the world of Scrabble that took place in October 2005:

THE ADDITION OF NEW WORDS TO THE SCRABBLE DICTIONARY

Words such as “ZA”, “QI”, and “ZZZ” were added recently, according to the WSJ.  Apparently, “recently” means “in the past 4-5 years” to them.

Regardless, here at Web Watch we believe in making sure that you are not sucked into the same vortex of bad Scrabble-playing that the WSJ would lead you down if you had to wait a few years to discover that there had been a Scrabble dictionary update.  So here are the list of handy two- and three- letter words that you should have at the ready the next time you need to impress your Scrabble-playing friends…along with the unexpected WSJ followup:

Sure, it may not even be scheduled to air yet, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t set a TiVo reminder to record HEAD RUSH on Cartoon Network when it airs later this year (along with the rest of the new Cartoon Network shows planned for 2009, which – oddly enough – aren’t all cartoons).
