How to Verify an Internet Hoax

Ever wanted to pull off your own viral Internet hoax?

The Internet has made coming up with new and original ideas easy. Check out THE MUSEUM OF HOAXES for a list of stunts that have already been pulled off, and then think about putting your own unique spin on the event.

Still, trying to come up with a unique hoax idea or wacky news item that hasn’t been done before has been made more difficult by the proliferation of those forwarded emails that everyone must have received at some time or other. Just because your friend has sent you an email with a news item in it does not mean that the news item in question is true. As is often the case, the person forwarding the email may not have checked their facts before sending it. Remember – even though you were sent that forwarded email from a trusted friend or family member, they could have been duped somewhere along the way.  You should always check your sources as well.

The Top Five List: Daily Internet Humor

Have you ever seen something in the newspaper or heard something on the news that just didn’t seem right to you?  News reporters are supposed to check and double-check their facts before reporting things, right?

Just ask The New York Times and ABC News anchor Peter Jennings what happened to them in the winter of 1999, when they had a report on mistranslated Chinese movie titles.

Bachelor Party / Bachelorette Party Tips

BACHELOR PARTY TIPS is a site where the wedding party participants who decide to take charge of the pre-wedding bachelor or bachelorette party festivities can go to come up with some great ideas and planning tips that ensure the lucky bride or groom have a great time.

They have the traditional party pledge that all partygoers must sign and adhere to at all costs, drinking games, party points (those with the most points at the end of the night wins, obviously), a list of 32 “Dudes Rules”, tips on stripper etiquette, and to-do lists for the bride or groom-to-be.

On those to-do lists?  For bachelorettes, it includes:

  • Do a shot
  • Take off your bra while in the bar
  • Dance with two guys at once
  • Collect a man’s underwear (extra points for holes or skid marks)

For bachelors, their list includes:

  • Get a girl to kiss you
  • Get a girl to spank you
  • Ask at least 5 women if they are your fiance
  • Have a beer chugging race with the rest of the bachelor party

The site implies that bachelorette parties are a bit more crazed than are bachelor parties.  Take a look at the suggestions they’ve posted for the “Bachelorette I Never” drinking game.  Remember, in this game the object is to never have done these things, because you must take a drink if you have. Which basically means that at least one person in the group has done this stuff.  Lucky groom, we hope.

  • Went skinny-dipping
  • Stuffed my bra.
  • Had a one night stand.
  • Wore a skirt without underwear.
  • Had sex in a car.
  • Have been tied up.
  • Had sex outside.
  • Threw up in public.
  • Woke up with a man who I didn’t know.
  • Kissed another woman.
  • Kissed two different guys in one night.
  • Sunbathed Nude.

I’ll bet you could combine the “I Never” list with the “Bachelorette To-Do” list and have a really interesting story to tell at the divorce proceedings.

Playboy’s List of Top Party Schools

Playboy started publishing a list of the TOP PARTY SCHOOLS back in 1987. That list was created from surveys of students, and was fairly straightforward. 15 years later in 2002, Playboy published an updated Top Party Schools list.

For their first list in 1987, Playboy surveyed “club leaders, dorm rush chairmen, fraternity presidents, and other campus socialites” at more than 250 college campuses across the country, and compiled this student-generated list of which schools were the BIGGEST PARTY SCHOOLS at the time.

Here are the 40 entries on PLAYBOY’S 1987 LIST OF TOP PARTY SCHOOLS:

Derek’s Big Archive of Wal-Mart Purchase Receipts

Derek has a lot of time on his hands.

Derek spends a lot of time at Wal-Mart.

Derek also likes to keep his Wal-Mart receipts on-line for us to see.

DEREK’S BIG WEBSITE OF WAL-MART RECEIPTS is a complete list of every Wal-Mart purchase Derek has made since 1996 – combined with visitor commentary on his purchases.

It’s just like we were sitting in the Wal-Mart parking lot making fun of the customers as they leave the store, but without the risk of being run off by those elderly greeters. Again.

2002’s Sexiest Geek Alive

The 2002 “SEXIEST GEEK ALIVE” was announced yesterday at Austin’s annual SXSW show. 12,000 men and women applied, and it was narrowed down to 8 finalists. The winner this year is Chad Briggs. Winning involved a talent segment, an interview, and an online test – which is available on the website.

The test includes four categories (math/science; computers/programming; nerd culture; science fiction) and questions such as, “What is the half-life of a free neutron?” and “What medical condition is primarily responsible for preventing Homer Simpson from being a genius?”

Ellen Spertus, 33, of San Francisco, the 2001 winner, took the crown by wearing a corset made of circuit boards and counting in binary on her hands.  Ellen was unable to answer the question about how many processors were available in her house, as she claims to own too many to count, what with her bread machine, electric car, and other electronic devices.

This year’s contest included a contestant playing jazz piano while lying down on the bench and reaching backward over the keyboard, and another giving a PowerPoint slide presentation on speaking Russian.

The Whirlpool Polara Oven

Remember Jason Alexander, the actor who played the character “George” on Seinfeld? One of his first acting roles — if you can call it that — was for the famous McDonald’s McDLT.  Let’s take a look:

Why do I bring this up?  because when it comes to keeping the “hot side hot, and the cool side cool”, nothing beat THE WHIRLPOOL POLARA OVEN.  It’s a refrigerator…inside your oven!

It’s like a big giant crockpot, designed with food safety in mind.  Just put your raw food into the oven, and tell it what time to start cooking.  Your food will be kept safely refrigerator cool (no e.coli here!), and will be almost done cooking by the time you make it home from the office.

And to think that watching this fancy stuff on The Jetsons was all futurey and stuff.
