TIL that you are who you hang out with

Web Watch has two questions for you today:

How many close, personal friends do you have in your Real Life?
How many close, personal friends do you have online?

The qualifier portion of these questions are really that “close” and “personal” portion. Everybody has dozens of acquaintances, people you know peripherally.

Friends of friends.

Spouses of friends.

Folks you see at the bar / soccer field / diner on a regular basis, enough to wave or say “hi” to, but not necessarily people you’d invite over for a bottle of wine.

Would they qualify as “close, personal” friends?

We’d go with an average and say that at least 25% of you are… but we figure that may be a bit high of an estimate.

Parents: how do you punish your children when they get out of line and you need to make a quick disciplinary action?

Do you count to three, but don’t have any idea what to do when you reach the number four, five, or ten?

Sometimes spanking – or, at the very least, a quick swat on the butt to get a child’s attention – is the method of last resort for some parents. Look, whether you agree with spanking or not, parents should agree that the reason spanking has survived as long as it has over the generations is because it works.

While the old adage of “this hurts me more than it hurts you” may come into your mind if you decide to spank your child, that may not necessarily be true anymore.

Cab drivers don’t have an easy life.

For one things, we’ve always been told “never get into a car with a stranger”, and yet when it comes to riding in a cab — that’s exactly what we’re doing. Odd that this is typically the very first thing that we end up doing when we visit a new city. Who are these people? Where are they taking us? Are they ripping us off in doing so?

But don’t let a few bad apple cab drivers ruin the experience for everyone. 99% of all cab drivers out there are just good ol’ working folk, trying to make a living.

Even if you’re one of those Occupy Wall Streeters, complaining about everything that Big Business is doing to Keep You Down, chances are you’re also a little bit brand conscious.

Aside from the fact that the OWS movement went to all the trouble of ensuring that they have a trademark on “OCCUPY WALL STREET”, those 99% really aren’t any different from the rest of us.

They’re wearing name-brand clothing, purchased at a name-brand retailer.

They’re marketing their protest with Apple and Google phones, using Facebook and Twitter over cellular networks or purloined free WiFi connections that are setup/maintained/paid for by other corporations.

A protest is fine, and bringing attention to companies’ misdeeds is powerful — but don’t complain about how all businesses are bad if you have to rely on them in order to handle your protest in the first place.

See, it really IS all about branding and marketing, isn’t it?
