Need money for the holidays? Stop wasting your money on this stuff…

With the holiday gift-giving season right around the corner, you may find yourself trying to find ways to scrape some money together.

Web Watch is a fan of making a big dinner, then eating leftovers for lunch the next day to avoid paying $5-$10 for lunch. Doing that can save the average office worker at least $20/week in lunch money – up to $50/week or more, if you eat at fancier places.  That’s found money.

If you subscribe to HBO, SHOWTIME or other premium movie channel – you may want to consider dropping those and switching to an “on-demand” movie service like NetFlix or Amazon on Demand (assuming you have a TiVo, PS3, or other box that will support those services).  The $10/month that you’ll pay is likely less than what you would pay for those TV channels.

Here are some other suggestions for HOW TO CUT UNNECESSARY EXPENSES OUT OF YOUR BUDGET, simply by changing your purchasing habits, or substituting different products for ones you use every day:

Black Friday comes early: major retailers to open on Thanksgiving instead

Black Friday
Black Friday

Thanksgiving is coming soon, and with it that annual rite-of-passage called BLACK FRIDAY.

You know – that’s the day that everyone wakes up extra early during a 4-day holiday weekend (if they go to sleep at all) and trudge the family out to the local mall to see if there are any bargains to be had.

Web Watch will save you some trouble — we’ve looked at a number of the ads for this year, and all we can say is “eh”. Sure, go out and buy something if you absolutely need it, but we didn’t see anything that is making us plan on losing sleep.

Buying Secrets of Retailers
Buying Secrets of Retailers

November is time for shopping, especially as we get closer to the end of the month when the Holiday Shopping Season begins.

So while the retailers are working their magic to get you into the store with all their most awesome sales, there may be a few things that we as consumers should pay attention to regarding the way retailers affect our buying habits and control our purchases.

Here is a list of THINGS CONSUMERS DON’T LIKE ABOUT HOW RETAILERS CONTROL WHAT WE BUY:

Calling in sick to work? Don’t use one of these excuses

The Instant Excuse Ball
The Instant Excuse Ball

Web Watch has worked for two types of companies:

  • Those that split up holidays, vacation, and sick time into three separate trackable categories
  • Those that give employees a giant bucket of PTO (paid time off) for the employee to do with as they please

The philosophy behind the former is that an employee would have a bank of sick days that are available even if they use up all their vacation.

The philosophy of the latter is that employees should be treated like adults, and if they want to use all their “sick” days as actual vacation then it’s up to them do choose to do so.

There really are pros and cons of both.  There’s nothing wrong with taking a “mental health day”, but having official vacation days that can be scheduled helps the organization ensure that there is proper coverage for whatever they happen to need staff for.

Ashoka’s Social Entrepreneurship Series presents Architect of Corporate Responsibility: The Story of Alice Tepper Marlin and Social Accountability International

Being corporately responsibile is not necessarily an easy thing to do, let along doing so and being recognized for it.

Harder still, is coming out on top of such a list of recognition.

Yet, that’s exactly what JOHNSON & JOHNSON  and THE WALT DISNEY COMPANY have done this year in this year’s CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY INDEX

How to Get Ahead at Work: Sleep with the Boss

Should I Sleep with the Boss?: And 99 Other Questions about Having a Great Career
Should I Sleep with the Boss?: And 99 Other Questions about Having a Great Career

7%.

That’s the percentage of people who have admitted to SLEEPING WITH THEIR BOSS IN ORDER TO ADVANCE THEIR CAREER.

Let’s repeat that:  7%

Do you know what 7% looks like?  Sure, you could do the easy math and say that it’s just 7 people out of your office of 100 employees.

That’s not so bad.

But if you work in a smaller office — let’s say an office of around 14 people… then take another look.  7% is the same as 1 in 14 people.  So you have to ask yourself – which one of those people are doing it?  You know they are – statistics don’t lie.  Besides, 17% of those surveyed said that sleeping with the boss was perfectly fine.
