What to wear to a job interview (and some things not to wear)

Can I Wear My Nose Ring to the Interview?:
A Crash Course in Finding, Landing, and Keeping Your First Real Job

Not everyone knows what to wear to a job interview.

Yeah, the traditional suit should still work, but in today’s wacky world of “business casual” or “jeans Fridays”, the potential job seeker sometimes chooses the wrong outfits to appear at the potential future office with.

The good interviewer will share what the usual “around the office” dress code is, but that doesn’t mean that the applicant should show up in the same type of clothes in order to fit in. You don’t have the job yet, Bucko, so leave the flip-flops at home.  Flip-flops don’t belong in the office anyway.

So what should the applicant wear?  Well, you can never go wrong with a suit — unless you know ahead of time that the office is a bit more casual, in which case go with some nice slacks and dress shirt (but lose the tie).

I Hate People!: Kick Loose from the Overbearing and Underhanded Jerks at Work
and Get What You Want Out of Your Job

Everybody knows an office jerk.

They’re the ones who yell, scream, pound the table — and in general, make the office a bit miserable for everyone. They may be absolutely fantastic at their job, but that doesn’t mean that people have to like working with them.

Here’s another reason to hate them: they’re probably making more money than you, for doing the exact same thing you’re doing.

So why is that?

One thing that successful people have going for them is that they’re always hustling, always striving to make that next dollar.

Or, when looked at from a more practical viewpoint: as Dave Ramsay often says, “you don’t have an debt problem, you have an income problem”. In other words, you can make ends meet – but you need to get off your fat butt and take on a second or third weekly paycheck in addition to your primary job.

10 Things Not To Put on your Resume Cover Letter

Career Essentials: The Cover Letter
Career Essentials: The Cover Letter

A while back, Web Watch covered 10 WORDS NOT TO USE ON YOUR RESUME

We figured it was time to also provide job-seekers 10 THINGS NOT TO INCLUDE ON YOUR COVER LETTER, especially after one recent interview session that Web Watch had to sit through recently.

Granted, the issue we had was with the resume itself rather than with the cover letter, but hey – it’s all in the name of a good story, isn’t it?

The candidate presented a resume that showed appropriate skills the job required – no issue there. But they decided to include a list of previous job experience that had absolutely no bearing on the job they were interviewing for.

Seriously, why would they include that they trained runway models how to model fashions if the job they were applying for had absolutely no relationship to the fashion industry?  C’mon people – after you reach a certain age and success level in your career path, it’s time to exclude your GPA and college experiences from your resume.  Nobody cares that the potential Vice President of Sales and Marketing spent their summer as a part-time employee at The Gap 25 years ago. Show us what you did last month, or the last five years.

Resume Magic: Trade Secrets of a Professional Resume Writer

When was the last time you had to write a resume?

You never know when you may find yourself in a situation where you may need to produce your resume at a moment’s notice.  Web Watch recommends that once a year, you take out your existing resume and update it with the past 12 months-worth of accomplishments, while your most recent job review is fresh in your mind.

It won’t hurt, and then you have it ready on the off-chance that a recruiter calls you with “The Most Ultimate Job Opportunity Ever… if I can have your resume in my hands by 3:00pm today…”

But there are some JOBS THAT AREN’T THAT TOUGH, BUT STILL HAVE HIGH INJURY RATES.  Here’s a list of those jobs that may sound easy and lucrative, but in reality may end up putting you in the hospital or worse  Take being a farmer, for instance – their rate of injury is 38.5.  And some would say that working on a ranch is the easy way out.
