WHEN IT DROPS tells you when new releases are coming out each week

The Amazon Kindle
The Amazon Kindle

The AMAZON KINDLE is great:  whenever a new book release comes out, you can pretty much instantly download that book to your Kindle and begin reading immediately.

The hard part is knowing what books — or movies, or DVD’s, or video games — are being released each week so that you can be prepared ahead of time.  Sometimes things get released and you just haven’t been paying attention.

Play the COUGARTOWN Movie Title Mashup Game

Cougartown
Cougar Town

On the season 2 opener of ABC’s Cougar Town, the cast sat around drinking wine (as they are apt to do on this show) while they played their new MOVIE TITLE MASHUP DRINKING GAME.

Let’s let Ian Gomez explain it to us:

Video Fun: Reservoir Dogs mashup videos meet Cee-Lo Green’s F*** YOU

Reservoir Dogs Soundtrack
Reservoir Dogs Soundtrack

So the other day, Web Watch told you about the NEW CEE-LO GREEN SONG “F*** YOU” and how awesome it was.

And it ends up that we were not the only ones who thought so.  FU has struck just the right cord with so many people, that they’ve quickly begun to do FU MASHUPS, where they take the Cee-Lo track and apply it to other films.

Here’s how it looks against THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION:

Movie geeks and the most quoted movie lines of all time

Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Web Watch was looking at plants at the local nursery the other day, and we couldn’t help but say, “Get me a shrubbery!” to the salesperson who was trying to help us.

Needless to say, we ended up making our own landscaping selections that day, and we can’t really say that we blame the retail shop for not providing a high level of customer service to any customer who decides that quoting Monty Python is the best way to get what we want.

But that’s how movie fans are.

Once we see a film with a great line of dialogue in it, we want to quote that line over and over.  Run it into the ground, if we had the choice.

The Lindsay Lohan and Shamwow Connection

Shamwow
Shamwow!

Linsay Lohan and Vince “the Shamwow Guy” Offer have something in common.

No, it’s not being arrested and having their mugshots plastered all over TMZ and other websites (although that is a good guess from any reasonable person).

No, they are appearing together in a new movie called UNDERGROUND COMEDY 2010 to be released later this fall.

Catch the trailer here:

Video Fun: Inappropriate Soundtracks make movies fun again

Hearing the Movies: Music and Sound in Film History
Hearing the Movies: Music and Sound in Film History

Most hardcore movie fans are also fans of film music and soundtracks.

We’ve all seen those cheesy Oscar presentations where they show us how important it is to have music supporting key film scenes, as they demonstrate how a film clip plays out both with and without its accompanying audio track.

But who’s to say that the audio track that the film score composer used was the correct choice?  INAPPROPRIATE SOUNDTRACKS puts the creative side back in the hands of us – the movie-loving public – and allows us to recut our favorite movie scenes with new audio for a completely different experience.

Can you name the top merchandised film of the past 18 months?

Profit from your Idea via Smart Licensing
Profit from your Idea via Smart Licensing

Web Watch has previously covered HOW MUCH MONEY THE DISNEY CORPORATION MAKES ON POOH AND MICKEY MERCHANDISE, and it should come as no surprise that licensing of film characters — whether it be from any of the Disney-Pixar canon, to action heros, to Harry Potter, or to those appearing in the Twilight series – is all big, big business and massive money makers for those who hold the character licensing rights.

But can you name which are the TOP TEN FILMS WITH FILM MERCHANDISE over the past 18 months, based solely on the amout of imported licensed products that have been coming through customs (in other words, not counting anything made in the USA)?

Movie Review: Toy Story 3

Toy Story 3 Poster
Toy Story 3 poster

Rated G for being appropriate for all ages, and a must-see for everyone.  Remember, a “G” rating or that the film is animated does not mean that the film is intended to be seen only by children.
Rating: A+

TOY STORY 3 is the latest film from Disney-Pixar, and completes the Toy Story trilogy that had releases in 1995 and 1999.  While the first two Toy Story films were made four years apart, Web Watch will estimate that only 2 years of movie-time passed for the characters in the film.  On the other hand, Toy Story 3 was released 11 years after Toy Story 2, and the filmmakers decided to run the movie clock those eleven years as well – which means that it’s time for the toy’s owner, Andy, to head off to college.

The 26 Most Disturbing Kids Movies Ever Made

Disturbing Movies

Growing up, we all remember being taken to see certain movies with our parents and wondering why they thought that seeing these films would be a good idea.

Web Watch faintly remembers being taken to see a double-feature of THE THREE MUSKETEERS with UPTOWN SATURDAY NIGHT, and recalls that we really couldn’t follow the plots of either film, let alone understand why we were taken to see them.

But when it comes to kid’s films, Walt Disney once famously said “for every laugh, a tear must fall”, which explains why many Disney films made back in the day contain some vivid, scary imagery or themes that may be a bit heavy for what today are considered to have been – truthfully or not - primarily children’s films.  There’s a reason why the attraction at Walt Disney World is entitled SNOW WHITE’S SCARY ADVENTURES… because that Evil Queen reallydoes live up to her name.

How Disney Villains stack up against each other, and against other characters

The Disney Villain

Remember a few months ago when Web Watch showed you the PIXAR CHARACTER SIZING CHART?  Well, it seems that was just the beginning for artist Juan Pablo Bravo.

Since then, he has come out with two additional charts in his character sizing series:

Disney/PIXAR Character Sizing Guide (comparing Toy Story’s Woody to WALL-E to UP’s Kevin and more)

Pixarpedia
Pixarpedia

Aspiring animators and cartoon artists are constantly trying to size their characters up against each other, to ensure that perspectives and size relationships are maintained throughout the production.

It’s probably why Keifer Sutherland is always filmed from low camera angles on “24″, in order to maintain size ratios with his co-stars and give Keifer the “larger than life” persona he needs to portray Jack Bauer.  But we digress.

With this in mind, artist Juan Pablo Bravo has put together an art piece that compares the sizes of all major Disney/PIXAR characters from TOY STORY through UP (including some of the Pixar shorts, such as Geri’s Game or For The Birds)

Movie Review: Hot Tub Time Machine

Hot Tub Time Machine
Hot Tub Time Machine

Rated R for language, nudity, alcohol, and bad 80′s fashion.
Rating: C

Web Watch loved those classic 80′s raunchy comedies, such as HOT DOG… THE MOVIE, CLASS,  LOSING IT, or THE LAST AMERICAN VIRGIN.  HOT TUB TIME MACHINE harkens back to those simpler cinematic days, when all you needed for a comedy was a weak premise, some decent jokes, a killer soundtrack, and an excuse to show people naked.

Can You Name the Top Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Characters of All Time?

The Gay Cookbook

Web Watch admits that we watch a lot of TV.  And frankly, we’re willing to watch practically anything that the networks and various cable channels decide to fill our TiVo automatically-recorded suggestions queue with.

Which is why we don’t understand what all the kerfuffle is that some have about the types of characters that TV anf film writers and producers decide to use on their scripted shows.  Web Watch doesn’t care about the sexual orientation of the characters on the shows or films we watch – we just want what we’re watching to be good in the first place.

Oscar Watch 2010: the nominated animated short LOGORAMA is AWESOME

Logos We Love

Have you heard about the Oscar-nominated animated short LOGORAMA?   It’s about 15-minutes long, and takes place in a world where everything – and we do mean EVERYTHING – is a logo.

The police, for example, are Bibendum (you may know Bibendum as “The Michelin Tire Guy”).

The zoo contains the Democratic Party elephant and Izod alligator logos.

Generic passers-by are the AOL guy and the BIC pen people.  If you know of a company that has a vehicle as their logo, you can be sure that it will be seen driving around this Logo city.

The plot is your basic cop-versus-bad guy story, with NSFW language that seems to have been pulled from a Tarintino movie.  But the creativity that went into creating a world made entirely of corporate logos is astounding.

Web Watch picked Logorama to win this category in our annual Oscars movie pool, without having even seen the film.  Now that we have watched it, we’re not changing our selection at all.

Enjoy!
