Where you live dictates your utility bill costs

How much energy costs the average homeowner differs from house-to-house, as well as from state-to-state.

Some states have abundant energy resources, and the cost to deliver that energy to one’s home can be very inexpensive.

Some states have higher energy taxes or infrastructure issues that make providing electricity more expensive than other places.

It should come as no surprise that the US ENERGY INFORMATION ADMINISTRATION collects and analyzes things like this, and makes that information available to us – the American public.

How Extreme Couponing Works, and how to save money at the grocery store with it

Pick Another Checkout Lane, Honey: Save Big Money & Make the Grocery Aisle your Catwalk!
Pick Another Checkout Lane, Honey: Save Big Money & Make the Grocery Aisle your Catwalk!

If you’re like Web Watch, you watch a lot of television.  And one of the more recent interesting series we’ve caught is TLC’s EXTREME COUPONING.

You know the show – it features shopping trips by couponing fanatics who are able to save 90% or more on their supermarket bill by careful planning and using coupons.

TLC’s cameras follow these proud hoarders around the store as they fill their shopping carts with hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise that they’ll pay just cents on the dollar for – and then show us their “mini-marts” of storage at home, where they have enough cereal, bathroom supplies, and diapers to last for months or years without returning to the store ever again.

While Web Watch admires some of these coupon folks for using their shopping knowledge to supply charities or care packages for overseas troops, it’s those featured on the show that end up buying products that they’ll never use that really concerns us.  One show featured a woman who had almost a year’s worth of diapers in her storage area – she’s not married, pregnant, or has any children of her own. She did this so she’ll be ready when that time comes.

Just what every baby needs to wear – disposable diapers that are five years older than they are.

9 Things not to spend money on when you retire

How to Stretch Your Retirement Dollar (A Practical Guide to Getting More Life Out of Your Money)
How to Stretch Your Retirement Dollar
(A Practical Guide to Getting More Life Out of Your Money)

How much money do you have saved for retirement?

More specifically, how much money do you think you’ll need to live comfortably when you retire?

Obviously, the answer to the second question revolves around a complicated set of formulas based on how long you think you’re going to live and when you’re planning to retire.  Where you’re going to live.  Whether you are concerned about just your own expenses or if you’re supporting others (or having children take care of you).

Some experts have said that you should try living on just 25% of your current salary for a year, just to see if you could afford retirement spending in your current mindset.  If not, maybe you need to adjust your retirement plan a little bit.

Need money for the holidays? Stop wasting your money on this stuff…

With the holiday gift-giving season right around the corner, you may find yourself trying to find ways to scrape some money together.

Web Watch is a fan of making a big dinner, then eating leftovers for lunch the next day to avoid paying $5-$10 for lunch. Doing that can save the average office worker at least $20/week in lunch money – up to $50/week or more, if you eat at fancier places.  That’s found money.

If you subscribe to HBO, SHOWTIME or other premium movie channel – you may want to consider dropping those and switching to an “on-demand” movie service like NetFlix or Amazon on Demand (assuming you have a TiVo, PS3, or other box that will support those services).  The $10/month that you’ll pay is likely less than what you would pay for those TV channels.

Here are some other suggestions for HOW TO CUT UNNECESSARY EXPENSES OUT OF YOUR BUDGET, simply by changing your purchasing habits, or substituting different products for ones you use every day:

Allowance Jar
Allowance Jar

Web Watch was at a friend’s house the other day when we noticed a lineup of jars along the kitchen counter, each one decorated with one of their children’s names.  Inside the jars were various amounts of glass beads, found at your local arts-and-crafts store.

We had to ask – what’s up with the jars?

Video Fun: Peeing in the Shower Saves Water

In Brazil, the environmental group SOS Mata Altantica, has released a video asking people everywhere to conserve water.

Their request is very specific: they want you to SAVE WATER BY PEEING IN THE SHOWER.

After much research, they’ve determined that peeing in the shower will save at least one toilet flush.  And if each household can flush one less time per day, they could save over 1,000 gallons of water.  Multiply that 1,000 gallons by the number of households in your neighborhood (or state, or country), and you’ll see that’s a lot of water being saved.

Check out the cameos in this video, showing all sorts of celebrities peeing in the shower, from Alfred Hitchcock to Michael Jordan.  If celebrities can pee in the shower, you can too.
