Surprise! McDonald’s doesn’t use Heinz Ketchup

Did you know that Heinz Ketchup is NOT served in McDonald’s restaurants?
(disclaimer: it’s still served at McDonald’s in Pittsburgh and Minneapolis, but try to go with the concept here, people)

We know!  Who would believe that any major fast food restaurant chain would serve anything other than Heinz Ketchup?

A few year’s ago, Web Watch was out shopping and saw a bottle of Hunt’s catsup in the shopping cart.  We asked about it, and we were told “Hunt’s is on sale, so we’re buying it.”

Now Web Watch has always been a Heinz Ketchup family.  No other ketchup even comes close in flavor to us.  We’ve tried those others, and they were just lame imitators of the true Ketchup King.

End result, we said, “we’ll pay you the extra $0.30 you’re saving on that Hunt’s catsup if that means we get to stick with Heinz Ketchup.”  And it’s been Heinz ever since.

What’s the most popular fast food restaurant? It’s all about who has the most friends.

Fast Food: A History of Wendy's, Arby's, Burger King and Other Popular Fast Food Restaurants
Fast Food: A History of Wendy’s, Arby’s, Burger King
and Other Popular Fast Food Restaurants

When we see a question like the one above (“What’s the most popular fast food restaurant in the world”), the answer can be quite varied.

If you’re talking about the most popular in terms of “french fries”, you’re likely going to be talking about McDonald’s.

If you’re talking about most popular in terms of number of US outlets, then Subway has almost twice as many as the next nearest chain.

No, today we’re going to look at this in a slightly different way — using the power of social marketing and community engagement, Web Watch is going to determine the Most Popular Fast Food Chain, based on the number of Facebook Likes.  (the list of Top Fifty Fast Food Restaurants provided by QSR magazine)

Choose better fast-food meal options by not ordering the combo meals

Combo Meal – Meat Shake

A study by University of Virginia professor Kathyrn Sharpe in the Journal of Public Policy & Marketing entitled “Consumption Effects of Bundling: Consumer Perceptions, Firm Actions, and Public Policy Implications,” says that ordering combo meals may not be good for you, health-wise.

The study found that when given a choice of ordering menu items a la carte vs ordering them as a combo meal, consumers would order the combo more often — even if the price point was exactly the same as the a la carte options.

Eating a double-cheeseburger at home is less expensive than buying the $1 version at McDonald’s

Double Cheeseburger
Double Cheeseburger

Web Watch has eaten many fast-food cheeseburgers over the years.

We’ve been to the standards – McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Burger King, Hardee’s – and have visited the occasional In-n-Out whenever possible.

But no matter how tasty and convenient for road trips the fast food burger can be, Web Watch will stand by our philosophy that nothing beats a good burger, done right at home.

Trent at The Simple Dollar agrees:  he has done the analysis and concluded that IT IS CHEAPER TO BUY THE INGREDIENTS TO MAKE DOUBLE-CHEESEBURGERS AT HOME THAN IT IS TO BUY THEM FOR $1 AT McDONALD’S.

How Far Would You Travel to Get to a McDonald’s?

McDonald's GrimaceA McRib.  A Shamrock Shake.

These are at least two things that people get hankerings for from their local McDonald’s. Things that people will go out of their way to make sure they get when they know it’s on the menu.

So it all begs the question:  how far would you travel to get to a McDonald’s?

The answer?  Not as far as you might think…with a maximum distance of about 145 miles.

Even if McGriddles Weren’t Tasty, They’d Still Make Us Happy

Why do McGriddles, that tasty treat from McDonald’s that consists of egg, cheese, and bacon lovingly wrapped around two syrup-soaked pancakes, taste so good – and as a result, makes us happy?

It may surprise you that a STUDY ON THE NEUROSCIENCE OF MCGRIDDLES has shown that our happiness about McGriddles is not related at all with the taste of the McGriddle.  McDonald’s could serve us cardboard-wrapped cardboard, and it would be happily accepted just as well (assuming it was edible, of course).
