Weird Body Quiz

The New York Times, for all its supposed stuffiness, sometimes has some odd offerings on its website.

Today’s entry:  THE WEIRD BODY QUIZ, a 10-question test to see how well you know odd bits of human biology trivia.   Like, the best way for you to tell if your own breath stinks.

TheChive – a Photo Blog

By now, we’ve all taken the time to troll through Flickr or PhotoBucket to see what types of photos people have uploaded to their accounts.  These sites have turned online voyeurism into more of a hobby than it has been already.

But going through those sites can be a little too much work.  Don’t you wish there was a place that went through all those photo sites for you, found all the interesting photos, and lumped them all into various categories – all to save you the time of doing it yourself?  Well, then you need to check out TheCHIVE, A PHOTO BLOG.

Started by John and Leo Resig,  TheChive is to photos what The Onion is to news – taking what’s already out there, twisting it around, and making it funny.

Have you seen some of these photos they feature before?  Sure you have.  Are a lot of ’em badly Photoshopped?  Definitely.   Will they make you laugh?  That’s the goal.

Some of the galleries that they have compiled include:

TrapCall – Caller ID Unblocker

It’s quite possible that TRAPCALL will be disbanded in the near future due to privacy concerns, but until that happens cellphone users who hate answering calls from blocked or private numbers may have a workaround.

TrapCall is free, and is currently available only to AT&T and T-Mobile users (with others signing on soon).

If you have your phone blocked to Caller ID, have you noticed that when you call your credit card company (or other 1-800 number), that they know your number? This is the loophole that TrapCall takes advantage of to expose a blocked number to the recipient.

All a TrapCall customer needs to do is forward those blocked number calls to TrapCall. The call then gets looped back to the cellphone, with the caller’s number displayed.

Time will tell how long TrapCall will be allowed to be active.

The company behind TrapCall has been thrown in hot water before with their phone number manipulation tricks – they have a way to fake the Caller ID display to be any number the caller would like it to be. But the company has come under fire for this product as it began to be used for crime, felonious pranks, and identify theft.

That’s Not Cool

If you’ve seen the trailer for the movie He’s Just Not That Into You, then you know the scene where Drew Barrymore is rattling off all the places that she needs to check in order to contact her date: MySpace, Facebook, texting the cell phone, voicemails at work or at home.

While it’s a good thing that we’re so interconnected with all these social networks, sometimes it can be a little overwhelming.

And scary.

So along comes a website that really shouldn’t need to exist, but it does – THAT’S NOT COOL.  What isn’t cool?  Electronically stalking somebody.

You don’t necessarily want to be poked, superpoked, searched for, friended, have friends befriended, sent a virtual beer, thanked for the add, or otherwise forced to interact with all these online folks.  And sometimes, all that can turn into harassment.

So that’s where THAT’S NOT COOL comes in, giving you a way to send notices specifically to those who you feel need to back off just a little bit.  Brought to you by the Family Violence Protection Fund and the Ad Council, THAT’S NOT COOL offers advice and contact information for a number of help groups, such as the National Teen Dating Abuse Helpline, the National Center for Victims of Crime – Dating Violence Resource Center, and RAINN (Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network), if your online situation becomes one where you feel the need to get hold of those who can offer you more help.

Like I said, this site shouldn’t have to exist in the first place.  But for those who need it, it is a great resource to have out there.

Difference between men’s buttons and women’s buttons

Yet another sign that someone has too much time on their hands.

Check out this blog post from someone who has some in-depth analysis about why buttons on men’s clothing are left-over-right and buttons on women’s clothing is right-over-left.  Apparently, the commonly-thought reasoning of “because women help men dress” isn’t necessarily the correct answer.

What other products are created in specific men/women versions that really have no basis to support the difference beyond marketing?

F*** My Life

F*** MY LIFE is a venting and ranting forum for people who feel their life sucks but they don’t care.

Plus, you get good feedback from the other users on the site.  So after you post an example of why your life sucks   (“Today, I was talking to my parents about feeling insecure with my “beach body” as Spring Break keeps getting closer and closer. My dad proceeded to warn me by saying, “Don’t wear a gray swimsuit. People will try to roll you back into the ocean”. FML”), other people get to vote whether they agree with you and your life is crap, or if you did deserve that one.

The current top FML?  Try to top this one:  “Today, I received my passport in the mail. They got my birthdate wrong. Then I picked up my birth certificate that I had sent in with the application. Turns out my parents have been celebrating my birthday on the wrong day for 16 years. FML”  Yeah, they’re screwed.

Laughing at Fanny Packs

A friend of mine has many rules about how to live a happy life.

“Don’t wear denim shorts.”
“Don’t bother Daddy during the World Cup.”
“Don’t wear a fanny pack.”

The people at FANNY PACK ANTICS agree with my friend completely, and their photo gallery of tourists-gone-fashionably-wrong is an indication that there is something very, very troubling going on in today’s airports, bus terminals, and tourist destinations.

Their goal is to photograph every fanny-pack-wearing creature and post the horror of this image for the world to see.  This is probably the only place you’ll see a photo of tourists taking photos of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, instead of photos of the Tower itself.  That one make me laugh, as everyone was trying to do their best “hey, watch me hold the tower up. it’s hysterical!” pose.

Cake Wrecks

The CAKE WRECKS blog is simple, really.   Take a picture of a poorly-designed cake that was prepared at the local bakery or supermarket, upload it to the site, and mock it mercilessly on its spelling choices or bad art motifs.

It’s best when it shows the more creative side of cake decorating – Duff and the rest of the crew at Charm City Cakes have nothing to worry about here.  Cake Wrecks found a Star Wars-themed cake featuring Darth Vadar hovering over a newborn baby.  A cake decorated with a USB flash drive…instead of with the image store on the drive.  A Super Bowl-themed cake…drawn on a cake designed as a baseball-field.

And nothing can compare with their five-photo gallery of cakes designed to look like feet.  Ugly, post-operative feet.
